Two Under/ Help
« on: June 28, 2007, 06:17:00 PM »
Hi guys.  I have been shooting 3 Under/ I'd like to shoot two under but here is the problem.

1. I'm not nearly as accurate 2 under
2. I don't have nearly as good of sight picture

Are some people just apt to shoot better one way or can I learn to be proficient either way?

I get a better/ cleaner release 2 under/ but can't get a double anchor with 2 under. I can't touch my nose to the string... ANy ideas???

I shoot a long bow.  If I can't make it happen with 2 under/ would you go to a recurve and shoot 3 under?  Reason I'm asking is, it seems like someone told me in tourn's they don't allow longbow shooters to shoot 3 under???
Blessings,
Steve

Hello again Pastor Steve. I shoot three fingers under since I came back to recurves and longbows. The first thing I do when I get a new bow after trying it out, is raise the nock point a bit. Most bowyers ask you how you want your bow tillered  most don't tiller for three under, all's you do is raise the nock a bit . Therefore if you are trying to switch to split fingers and you are shooting a particular bow well three under, you should theoretically lower your nock point a little.Try this just about the thickness of the nock at first and see what happens.

Ok.  I seem to shoot about the same from 20 yards and in/ just as good either way. After 20 yards I seem to have a tuff time getting my windage correct with split finger shooting????

Steve

Why do you want to shoot 2 under if you aren't as accurate or have a poor sight picture? If you are plucking with your bottom finger, lower your elbow or just apply more even pressure.

I shoot three under and haven't had a problem at a shoot. You just can't string walk at most shoots.

You say you get a better cleaner release 2 under but still aren't as accurate. Please explain.

I think everyone has to find their own way.I would like to anchor with my middle finger instead of my first. It would make my gap smaller and easier to judge. My face must be shaped wrong because so far I can't get it to work for me.

Pastor Steve, If you shoot stiff bows be carefull with the two under. I shot that way for a while till I pulled some tendins and had to go back to 3-under because the pain was so bad. I also had a smoother release but thats a lot of pressure on two fingers, and I only shoot a 60# bow.

All good info right here Pastor Steve. The most I practice is 22 yards. You want to be able to get stickbow close anyway! Twenty yards and under is perfect.I shoot three under I 'm better that way. Like a wise man says "Whatever floats your boat" though.

I get a cleaner releasee in the fact that I don't pluck the string when shooting split finger. I feel like I have more control of the arrow also...  With three under I get a double anchor/ thumb on ear and nose on feathe. I can't do so with split finger. I get the thumb joint (bent) on ear, but can't get my nose on the feathers. I feel like split finger is just kind of a shot in the dark, so to speak... Three under I feel confident I will at least be on windage wise...  I don't know if it is just a desire to be traditional or what/ but I'd like to shoot split fingers.
Blessings,
Steve

Thats an example of "If It Aint Broke, Dont Fix It!"  :saywhat:   Just let the 3rd finger dangle on the String if you have too. Draw with 3 then when at anchor, drop the 3rd. Just My 2 cents-worth!      :archer:

I also wanted to shot split, but found I shot better 3 under, I was anchoring my index finger at the corner of my mouth. If I shot split I anchored middle finger at the corner of my mouth, but the pain in my index finger shooting split was too much to bear. Finally I decided that I shouldn't be locked on the anchor being at the corner of mouth, I changed it to  the lower front of my cheek bone (I also feel at tooth right there) and Voila! The pain was gone the release was better and the shooting got better. It also shortened my draw to 28" from 29" but I figure so what. I guess my point is don't get locked on any certain thing, experiment with an openness to get the whole thing working and you will find your niche. Good luck
