League scoring
« on: July 08, 2007, 09:35:00 AM »
Those of you who have mixed leagues(trads and wheels), do you use a handicap and is it different for each group?  As an example the formula we use is this.

(360-3wk avg) x handicap + Current Week = Score

The 360 is the total possible score for 30 3D targets.  (12x30=360)

The 3wk avg is the average of the previous 3 weeks actual scores.

The handicap is .8 for compound and .9 for trad.

The current week is this weeks score.

This formula has served us very well for years.  By using an average it keeps the weekly spikes and dips under somewhat control.

When this formula was created there was only 2 traditional shooters in the club.

Now out of 36 total in the summer league, there are 12 of us trads. (BTW, I think that's a pretty respectable 33% representation!)

After all of this intro, here's the problem.  Teams that have more trads than other teams are consistently getting the higher scores.  All the trads are there to have fun and throw sticks.  Yes we take it serious but basically we're pretty low key.

Some, not all by a long shot, but a few of the compound shooters are starting to question the amount of trads on a team.  And yes, the team I'm on is currently winning.  That makes it really bad for me as I'm the stats guy!  Double aarg!!

I'm going to poll the other trads to see if they care if I move the trads to .8 or .85 handicap.  If they don't care then I'll poll the compound shooters about the change.

Long way back to the original question.  What do you do?
