Arrow hitting hard on strike plate
« on: July 28, 2007, 10:09:00 PM »
Here's my setup:

70" wood composite longbow, 50# @ 30", string nock 5/8" above 90 degrees, ash arrows spined 55-60.

Looking at my leather strike plate, it appears the arrow is wearing on the plate a bit. I'm not hearing anything odd upon release (like a *CLACK* of the arrow hitting the rest).

so, what are some factors for strike plate wear?

Are the arrows spined 55-60 at the length you have them cut at?

they were spined the *normal* way, for a 28" length.

They may be a little weak for your set-up then.

If the bow is not center shot you will probably need arrows around 40/45# spine. If your arrows are spined 55/60 and are 30" long bop then they would be around 45# at that length, might be a tad stiff. 50/55 spine arrows at that length would be around 40#. Just my two cents.

Just becasue you bought arrows that are supposedly spined 55-60 doesnt mean they are. You need a spinetester to make sure you know what you got. If they are 55-60lbs at 28 they will be 45-50 at 30.And since your bow is 50 at 30 " draw which you are drawing?? it should be close enough to work good. So are you truly drawing 30" and are those arrows truly 55-60 is what you need to find out.

Shooting lots of arrows.......and a non-durable strike plate material.

What exactly do you mean by 'wearing'?....if you shoot, it will wear to some degree.

If you are getting good flight then I don't see a problem...leather will wear from the heat and friction of the shot.  Not sure if you got some cheap thin leather or what....knees and elbow leather is much more durable than belly leather.
