learning gaps?
« on: August 25, 2007, 10:41:00 PM »
I tried gap shooting a few months ago and like the concept. I can hit a pie plate about 8 out of 10 times at 15 yards most of the time. I want to be able to hunt to 15 yards this fall and I am just having one problem. I can not always get the gap the right size. If the gap needs to be 15" under the bullseye, I'm not sure if its 10", 15", or 20" under the point I want to hit. Any pointers that can help me learn how to get my gaps consistent? thanks

Well, redclay, I just started gap shooting about a month ago but I'll give you one tip that helped me. I don't think of the gap in inches or feet. I use the size of the target as a reference. Let's say your gap needs to be 15" at 15 yards. Let's also assume that you are shooting at a deer which we'll say is about 15" from back to belly. If you want to hit the deer in the heart, just put the point "one deer width" below the heart and shoot.

This method seems to work on different size targets too. For rabbits, you might have to shoot "two rabbit widths" low. I'm still experimenting with this method but it seems to be working well so far. After a few days of shooting the gap becomes almost automatic.

Good Luck                   Joey

To me the distance under has to look the same for for every shot at a given distance

PErsonally, I don't pay attention to how many inches over/under the target I hold. I focus on the target and "feel" how much daylight there is between the target and tip of the arrow.

i don't hunt with gap shooting  for many reason but i do shoot 3d at certain ranges with gap and i usually just look at the target and guess ahead of time, i don't concentrate on a distance so much as a SPOT. pick a spot on what you want to hit then put your arrow tip on that spot and let'er fly. for instance if i am shooting a deer target at fifty yards i have about a 10-12 in. gap so when i see something i think is fifty yards i can usually pick out a leaf or something behind the target and rest my point on the leaf.

hope this helps it may not be the "correct" way to do this but it works for me.

they say with gap after enough practice it because natural and automatic like instinctive. but i never wanted to put that much effort into gap.

thanks alot guys. I did something, not sure what, but its working. I seem to be concentrating more on the spot I want to hit, and see the arrow in my peripheral vision. Split vision I think
