PLease help,Broadheads crazy
« on: September 05, 2007, 09:22:00 PM »
I have everything set to go to Wyoming on the 12th.  Today put on 12 new broad heads on the arrows that flew perfect.  Bare shaft, fletched judos. blunts everything flew perfect until today!!. I mounted 6 new snuffers and can not get them to fly.  They ALL take a 12 inch dip at 25 yards.  I tried the snuffers on a heavier spine and that caused a left right  fishtale. And a dip. I raised the nock a 1/8th. No differances  They pattern but in flight you can see the dip to the left.  There has to be a reason.  Please help??

That would be my question also. If your tapers are off a bit...well you can see what happens.

They spin true.  I spin them on my paln to feel any differance. I have a Dixon spinner to check that also.  His book said to raise the nock for BHs

What's the weight of the judos?..are they the lighter screw ins or the ones you glue on an adapter?

What weight Snuffer are you shooting, and what kind of adapter are you using?.....long or short aluminum, or 100 grain steel?

I shot wood shafts. 160 gr snuffers with 160 gr field points.  Judos are just for fun but they do fly fine to 45yds. Longbow 60 lb with 60 to 65 wood. Arrow length is 27 inch.  It shot way lower when I lowered my NP 1/8 inch.  It did improve when I raised the NP 1/8 and added 1/8 to side of shelf.  But they still group 10 inch low and to the left of FP.  They were 18 inches lower and to the left.  You can see them fly good for 15 yards then dip low left. I tuned with 160 FP bare and fletched. Great group to 20+ yards. Thank you all for your replys.

Let me see if I got this right, you have been shooting field points and judos for some time, you even bareshafted but until today you have not shot a broadhead out of your set up? I would be you a cup of coffee that you are under spined. and now you have a hunt in a few days and are panicing.

I am sorry, I may sound harsh, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how someone can go all year or summer and not make sure that big ole wind plane up front is shooting were it should after all the initial tuning was done.

I shoot a 54 and 55 pound longbow (Savannah and Crusader) and my wood arrows are 65/70 spined for 125 grain heads and fly perfect. I would suspect you need 65-70 or 70-75 arrows or go down on head weight.

This is my first longbow.  I have shot recurves for years and never thought it would be so hard to get the BH to fly.  I just mounted the BH on some barrel tapered cedar spined 70 - 75 cut at 29 inch. They are doing the exact repeat exact some thing as the 60 - 65 cut to 27inch The bow weight is 60 at 28 inch.

I have put three rug side plate to build the strike plate out about 3/8 of an inch and now the 70 - 75 are now staying on the large target.  Still not good enough to hunt with.

Shoot mechanicals........just kidding.
try lowering your brace height 1/4in. or get heaver heads, longer arrows or lighter spined shafts, sounds like you might be overspined.  There has got to be someone on here that is close enough to you to get together for some hands on.

Well, I'm stumped.  I've never had a bhead and field points of the same weight not go in the same place if all else was well.....and snuffers shouldn't plane with the big vents.

I'd suggest switching bheads to a different type and see what happened.

Sure looks like your arrows are to stiff and nock point to low (maybe).  All the charts I look at show you would need a 55# spine max for a 27" arrow with 160 BH.  I'd make  your strike plate as thin as possible.

I have been able to shot somr 160 Ribtex and they do not dip like the snuffers.  Same weight same bow set up but without the 12 inch dip at 25 yard. I still have all the rug rest on the strike plate.

I did not tell you that all of these differant arrow and BH combinations fly hunting good out of their intented bows.  Either a 60# Treestick or a 72# Hatfeild or a 78# Hatfield.  Why not out of the No name Longbow.  All of the other bow have some degree of center shoot but to get the LB to fly I have built out the strike plate.

Like Terry said interesting. are we all to assume you are drawing 26ish with an arrow 1 inch past? is so I agree with the way over spined arrow, but the 160 grain head should have taken care of this. This may souns extreme, have you raised your knock point 4/8 or even 5/8 to see were they fly. I had one bow that the knock point wasn't even on the charts to get good arrow flight

I draw the arrow allthe way til the BH hits the front of the bow.  Yes I have raised the NP.  It got worse.  I do think I am overspined.  I will try some 200 + BH and see if that works.  I have been shooting 160 FP and Bare shafted.  I thought I was doing right.  I never thought the BH would show the problem like it did.

I think that is all you can do. I bare shaft tuned once and the broadheads dove and swerved all over. but it all checked out bare shafting. I was under spined in my case. I always shoot broadheads when I am practicing or tuning.

I have found the problem. I am overspined at 27 inches.  I am able to shoot 60 -65 if they are 28 3/4 inches.  These are the arrows I shoot out of my Treestick.  The 27 inch snuffer arrow fly fine out of my 72 # hatfield.  I am going to try and find a heavy BH so I can shoot them out of the longbow.  Thanks for all the help

If this is the Hill style bow you have been posting about your arrows are overspined. Get some 55/60's at 28" and start with a brace around 6 1/8 and go up slowly from there.

After reading your posts, I inclined to think, in addition to the too high brace and the overspined arrows, you may be milking the grip.  Pay attention to your follow-thru and see if the bottom limb is snapping back toward you on the release.  If you are used to shooting high wrist recurves, it is common to shift the pressure into the web of the hand as you draw without even realizing it.  This causes all kinds of grief on Hill style bows.
