Split or 3under style.

I change from split to 3under because i get 1" longer draw and better anchor (nockpoint closer to my eye),and im just wondering if anyone else use 3under style with recurve

I've tried it but it just wasn't my thing. There are many people who use it with great results.

A couple of videos that I recommend are the Master's of the Barebow Vol. 1 & 2 that demonstrate a few archers who use it with great success.

I've been using it for three years and it just feels more natural.  Split feels too awkward. I have been playing alittle with it lately and have been doing pretty good, but I have more confidence with 3 under.

I have shot both ways and back again. Started split, after a few years went to 3 under, and have recently went back to split. Both work and I couldn't even tell you why I switched. It just kind of happened.

I don't like split much. I shot 3-under even before I started stringwalking, and since then, it has been imperative anyway.

Before that, I was facewalking a bit and really wanted to use split for some distances - but somehow couldn't switch between the two very comfortably. However, I know of many others who don't share that problem.

There are plenty of really good three-under shooters but I don't know that it's necessarily any better than split finger.  I think it's just a matter of personal preference and/or what you become used to first.  I've played around with three-under and it's got it's pros and cons like everything else.  I always go back to what split finger.  It's the way I've shot all my life and I'm happy with the results, so it will probably always be my go to method.

An advantage to shooting Split Finger can be that it gives you more control of the arrow while it's on the string.

An advantage to 3 Under can be that it gets the arrow closer to your eye without having to change your anchor point and can also decrease your Point On Distance if you prefer to shoot the majority of your shots at closer distances.

For example...let's say your Point On Distance is at 50yrds. with Split Finger but the majority of your shots are going to be at 30yrds. or less because you want to primarily hunt or compete in 3D tournaments where the targets are usually set at 30yrds. or under.

By switching to 3 under you can take approximately 15 to 25yrds. off your Point On Distance and have a new P.O.D. close to around 30yrds., which will also decrease the amount of gap at the closer distances compared to when you were shooting Split Finger. That will often make it easier to aim in the range you will be practicing for where the arrow point is somehwere close to the target while aiming.

well seeing as neither is "right" or "wrong" i guess it's preference, i tend to shoot better split.

Black Wolf, can you explain what you mean when you say split finger gives you more control of the arrow on the string?

Split Finger gives me more control of my arrow...especially when I have a reverse cant on my bow or when I'm stalking with an arrow on my string. I prefer to have pretty loose nocks on my string and it helps keep the arrow where I want it while I'm stalking or shooting with a reverse cant.

I feel there is less chance of the arrow getting out of position when I use a Split finger release as oppossed to 3 Under.

I see it as an advantage in some hunting situations...under the circumstances I explained but if an archer doesn't choose to put themselves in those particular situations...they will never realize those particular advantages.

I think so. What you are saying is that you are pinching the arrow to keep it in place?

I wouldn't say pinching...because, IMO...that may cause irratic arrow flight...and I don't get eratic arrow flight. I always carry a bareshaft with me and use it to make sure my form is correct and my arrow flight is near perfect.

Have you shot in the situations I described where I feel it's an advantage?

It would not be an advantage to me as although I shoot split finger, I have double nocking points on my string  which I keep my fingers on the outside of. Plus I personally would never move with an arrow on the string.
I used to shoot three under when I shot my ELB but again I used double nocking points, so my index finger came up against the bottom nocking point and not the arrow.

For me...it's almost a necessity when trying to close the distance on an animal when you're stalking...because you never know exactly when a shot may present itself. Some people may feel it's a safety issue...but I've never had a problem with it.

And it's definitely a necessity when you reverse can't the bow, IMO.

Have you tried reverse canting with 3 Under?

I couldn't get it to work very well at all.

Yes, but I use the index finger on my bow hand to keep the arrow in place.
Whenever I was teaching beginners, especially children, I would always teach them three under because it is much simpler to master. But I would introduce them to split at a later point along with using sights, and then let them decide for themselves which one they used.

Cool...are you able to keep the arrow in place at full draw when you move your index finger out of the way when your bow is in a reverse cant?

I wouldn't shoot with a reverse cant, it would just be to negotiate foliage. In fact I don't use much of a cant either way when I shoot, unless the surroundings demand it.

Yea...if you don't need or want to reverse cant your bow...you'll really never need or realize the advantage of Split under those circumstances.
