Need help with my anchor point
« on: June 02, 2008, 10:22:00 AM »
I have a very inconsistent anchor, and I believe this is my biggest problem w/ my shot and form.  It's not that I have target panic or snap shoot, I am very deliberate about coming to anchor, holding for 2-3 seconds and then releasing, I just anchor in a different spot depending on the day or week.  Sometimes I feel more comfortable w/ the middle finger in corner of mouth, sometimes index finger, sometimes thumb tucked into hand and under cheekbone, sometimes thumb extended and tucked behind upper jaw bone, etc.  I think my problem is I can't decide which is best and which I'm most comfortable with.  I really need to pick one and stick with it and practice with it on a close/blank target, but I'd like some input (and pictures if possible) on what works best for you all.  I shoot split fingers btw.  Thanks for the help.

The most important thing about an anchor is that is has to be consistent.  You just have to work out the specifics based on what is comfortable and effective for you.

Once you pick out one, stick to it.  This is one of the things that blank bale can help.  Once you have picked an anchor, just shoot into the bale with your mind focused only on repeating the anchor point each and every time.  Try to shoot good shots otherwise, but don't focus on them. Focus only on repeating the anchor every arrow.

Deciding on a different anchor point on a daily basis just confuses the aiming computer in your head.

As for specifics, try to go bone on bone.  It is usually more consistent.  However, plenty of guys do well using the corner of their mouth and other "soft" points.

Another consideration is keeping your arrow aligned with your dominant eye.

Your shooting probably won't improve unless you pick one anchor and stick with it.

I agree with Allen.  Picking an anchor and sticking with it is very important.  I go with my thumb knuckle tucked into my cheekbone. I think any anchor on the lower jaw can be problematic since the lower jaw and eye needn't always be in the same position relative to each other.

Givo,

Hey bud, for what it's worth i use one of my molars (but it needs to be the same one) and then  use my back thumb knuckle into the back of my jaw bone. Like Allen and Papa said This gives me two bone to bone contact points, helps ALOT. and lengthend my draw.

After reading these posts and also doing a search and reading about Terry Green's two point dynamic anchor and aim-draw-anchor sequence instead of draw-anchor-aim, and I did some practicing into a blank target last night and it felt very comfortable. I was anchoring a lot higher on my cheek before which I don't think was as comfortable for me and thus causing me to 2nd guess where I was anchoring all the time.  Stepped back to 15-20 yards and although I only have two arrows tuned up for the bow I was practicing with I put them consistently within 1.5" of each other on every shot.  Now just need to practice 1000 more times to make it muscle memory  ;) .
