New to me shooting method
« on: August 10, 2008, 10:01:00 PM »
I've been shooting strictly traditional for close to 10 years now.  I've always shot instinctive, and I'll add that I've always thought it pretty silly for folks to fuss about how other people shot.  I've had enough success shooting that way that I was confident and comfortable with my shooting.  That being said, this past summer I've been trying something different and it has improved my accuracy alot.

I still pick a spot and try to focus intently on it.  But I just make a concious effort to use my periphial vision to see my arrow.  I don't conciously make any adjustment that I know of, and don't particularly care if I do.  But I can shoot groups at 30 yards like I use to could shoot groups at 15 yards.  I think this would have to improve my success in the field.  And I consider myself a bow hunter above all else and don't much care about scores and what not.  It doesn't seem like doing this would make such a big difference, but it does.  I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  I'm also guessing this is what is referred to as "split vision"?  So what about it....?

Thats how I shoot too. It is hard to explain to someone. I dont use the point of the arrow but it seems like one eye looks at the spot and the other lines it up with the spot.

That is the technique that both Byron Ferguson and Howard Hill use or used.  Hill was known to say that he had met many "instinctive shooters" but had never seen a good one.  (Now we can beat the semantics of "instinctive" to death again.  LOL!)
