Am I doing something wrong
« on: December 14, 2008, 09:10:00 AM »
First I shoot bows 51-54 #'s at my 27 inch draw and shoot 3 fingers under. I draw it a full 27 inches with no fudging there.

Now for my question everyone with the exception of one person I have talked with shoots a way heavier spined arrow than my self. I have tried all the heavys from a aluminum 2216 down and have to shoot 2016's or 1916's . I'm currently shooting CX heritage 90's full length (29") . I bought the 150's and had to leave them almost full length ( 33" I think ) so I went with the 90's and have shoot completely through 2 deer this year. I like my points to be 175 grains as this is what my broadheads weigh. Anyhow is my form bad or something ? The 90's bare shaft , but are a little on the light side with 465 grains total arrow weight, I would like to shoot a heavier arrow without having to load up the front with 250-400 grains or leaving the srrows long I can't stand to shoot arrows hanging way over the shelf.

Well Jack, sounds to me like you are shooting fine with the arrows now and blew completely through two deer.  What does your arrow weigh?  I am of the philosophy if it works, why change it.  Knew a guy once had a bow that he could nail a can at 30 yards with arrows 30" long with his 27" draw.  He messed around for years trying differnt things and arrows/lengths, but for some reason the 30" was best.  So, he just said to heck with it and stayed with it.  He spent alot of money and time and started drinking heavily(well think I helped the last, wink)

Jack, i shoot a 64" black widow liw 55@27". i also have tried different arrows to see what works best and the results are the same as what you have found. The answer to your question, no there is nothing wrong with your form. i ended up with 2216 and a set of wood arrows both weighing 510 grains. some would say that these are a little light but they fly and perform great. It's like toddster says if it works don't fix it

Jack,

I may have read your post cross-eyed, but are you wanting to shoot heavier SPINED arrows or heavier WEIGHING arrows? Or both?

You could have a very stiff arrow that is light weight, or an arrow of high mass with a very light spine. You could even have the converse of both.

What I THINK you are looking for is a heavy weighing arrow spined to shoot well from your bow. Is that right?

Jack, it could simply be the way you shoot. I have seen folks shoot the same bow and need various spined arrows to get good flight. Nothing wrong with the way you shoot. It is what it is.

I shoot the Gold Tip Traditionals (not that I am suggesting you buy more arrows). They weigh a little more per inch than other carbon shafts. I use the brass inserts and a 150 grain point. I get an arrow weight of around 600 grains or so after I cap dip, crest and fletch with either 5 inch or 5.5 inch feathers.

I have a long draw length so I have to leave them full length. I am sure you know that as you shorten an arrow shaft, it actually increases the spine.

Good luck.

I think you are set up better than they are, right where you belong and right where a good advisor would have directed you. You have done well, Pilgrim. - lbg

Jack, I also have a 27" draw. Most of my bows are between 55-65lbs. I shoot cx150 out of my 61lb silvertip w/300 grains up front. I tried to shoot the 250s but they were too stiff. I had to leave them 3" longer than I like w/300gr up front. I suggest you use the weight tubes to increase weight instead of changing spine.

As near as I can tell 2016s would be the correct spine for your set up and with a good cut on contact head theirs no deer you cant kill.I used to like 2020 but they are hard to find anymore, congrats on the deer.

George the weight tubes will not fit in the CX 90's so I have to go with what they weigh and be happy, By the way guys Merry Christmas and thanks for all the posts.

Jack,

I seem to be in the same boat as you.  I always bare shaft tune and it seems I always need weaker spine than most folks.  If you're insistant on not loading the front, and if the weight tubes don't work, how about wooden dowels?  Al Smith used them in his arrows when he went to Africa.  Lowes and Home Depot should have them.  Just take a shaft with you and pick out the ones that work.  Might be worth a try.
