ok dont laugh
« on: March 13, 2009, 11:51:00 AM »
My problem is a un-cut shaft bareshafts real good(carbon)but it weighs to much. I shoot a hoyt gm2 at 50# 28 in. my arrow is a(this is the dont laugh part) beman 500 9.3 with a 125 tip. Do you think I could cut off 3 1/2 in. and shoot 145 tip and be ok?

why do you think it weighs too much? In general, taking off 3.5" you will need to up the point wt considerably more than 20gr

I shoot 3 under and with this setup "point on target" is about 15 yards were as its been about 30 yards. It drops like a rock but it sure does fly like a lazer beam. I also forgot to tell ya`ll the fast flight string was replaced with a darcon string. If I put a ff string back on it then would I be able to cut them down with a 125 tip.

First of all, I find it hard to believe those arrows shoot straight out of a 50# bow, if by "full length" you mean 33". If you cut 3 1/2 inches off that shaft it'll stiffen the spine considerably and you probably won't be able to add enough weight up front to bring it back to where you had it before, but personally I think you'd need to cut close to that much off to spine it properly for your bow. Also, not sure what you mean by "too heavy", as that setup only works out to about 390gr, which is only 7.8gr per pound of draw weight.

I was wrong, my nock was to high causing my hitting low. Quinn your right about the weight, but you think if I cut off that much it would be close? Thanks for the help.

Ok, I'm not putting myself forward as any kind of authority on arrow spine issues, it's just that I recently went through all this exact same problem. I wanted my arrows to be a certain length and I wanted to shoot a certain arrow. That's basically going at it backwards. If you want to shoot those 9.3's you need to let them (the arrows) tell you what length they need to be. I shoot a recurve that is about 48# at my draw length of 29". I now shoot beman team mfx carbon 500's w/125gr tips. They're cut to 30.5". They're pretty much the same spine as your arrows and they fly like darts out of my bow. Your bow's a bit heavier than mine and if you went to a 145gr tip that 29.5" shaft you want might work pretty well but I'd start at 30.5 and start working down half an inch at a time, just to be sure. That's my 2 cents worth... Good luck.
