Tink Noise?
« on: April 19, 2009, 02:41:00 PM »
I am at my wits end with this issue. When shooting my Dwyer Dauntless I get "tinking" noise as I shoot the arrow.
I am of the beleif it is the nock hitting the riser, but am not sure. Sometimes I do not get the noise so I am thinking it is coming from my inconsistant release, but it it there probably 95% of the time I shoot.
Sometimes I also get some porposing arrow flight, but not that often. Again I contribute that to my release.
Yesterday I nocked the arrow above my nock on the string (I use a metal pinch on nock) and no noise. So today I put a nocking point right on top of that nock, removed the lower one and then nocked below the nocking point again, still get the tink, maybe not as loud as it is hard to tell!!!  Nocking points are now at about 5/8" above the shelf and the is a little shelf ware on the outer edges of it, I think that is from the feathers rubbing, I have tried shooting with the cock featehr in, which seems to be a better fitfor the feathers clearing the riser.
Bow is 54#'s at my 27" draw length, shooting a Breasted shaft that are spined between 63-65#'s with at length of 29" BOP. Tips are 125 grain.
I do not beleive the nocks on the arrow are too tight, but maybe they are.
Only other thing I can add is when I sit on the ground and practice it is quiet as well, I do not think I am reaching my full 27" draw when sitting so maybe the arrows are too weak, although the person that made them for me says the should be good to go.
Any suggestions? I'm out of ideas other than getting rid of the crimp on nocks and tying one on.
Part that confuses me is the quietness of the bow with the arrow put on the string above the nock, and then moving the nock accourdingly and then getting the noise again after nocking below the string nock?

Maybe you are pinching in too tight on the nock and making it spring downward upon release and it's hitting the shelf, so when there is a nock below it that can't happen? what kind of arrows are they and what kind of nocks?
Everybody loves archery... some just haven't tried it yet.

Arrows are Breasted Cedar shafts, nocks are just the typical Classic Index Nocks.
I do notice that I tend to raise the arrow off the shelf sometimes when I draw the bow back. I've started to try to put more of the string pressure on my middle finder and less on the Index and finger next to my pinky. But still seem to get the noise.  Next time out I'm going to try to shoot 3 under and see if it makes a difference. Never have been able to get comfortable shooting 3 under, but I guess I can teach my brain to get used to it if I have to.
Maybe the solution is just to shoot with the arrow nocked above my nocking point?

Raise your nock point an 8th and see what happens.

I've had this happen several times over the years and always fixed it by moving the nocking point.  A couple of my bows always shot well with the nock set 3/4" or more above centerline.  Agree with Terry that you should try to move the nock some more.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bowhuntah is right. I've noticed that I tend to lift the arrow off the shelf the I'm drawing.
I'm going to try raising the nock point again and see if I can get her to quiet down, otherwise may just start nocking the arrow above the nocking point.

A good way of working out where you are getting contact is to put some lipstick on the arrow and see where it leaves a mark.
When you find out where the contact is you can then tune it out.
If your release is consistent and the tink is there every shot then go back to bare shaft tuning to ensure you are getting clean arrow flight.
Good Luck!

Another good method is to use spray foot powder on the arrow and the bow.  You will readily see where the contact is.

You might also try two nocking points, one above and one below the arrow nock.

Are you getting good arrow flight?  Do they seem to hit where you are looking?  By the sounds of it you are torquing the bow.  I get the same noise with only one of my bows and I am trying to work through it right now.  When you grip the bow don't use so much of the heal of your hand.  Grip the bow more in the web of the thumb and index finger along your life line.  Try this and see if it helps.  It will feel funny at first.

I had the same problem with a longbow, I finally took off the spider string silencers and put some Beaver balls on it,  the sound went away.

I had the same problem with a short Treadway long bow and stopped it by raising the knocking point.LCH
