Broadheads don't shoot like fieldpoints
« on: June 14, 2009, 06:12:00 PM »
I'm shooting mfx 500's, 30 1/2 inches w/125gr tips.
About 435gr total weight. 48# recurve. Shooting at 20 yards I warmed up on field points and waited 'til I was consistently shooting 4" groups before I switched over to 125gr screw in snuffers. Using identical technique and hold, my 4" groups moved to 6" out from center @ about 5 o'clock (4:30 actually). Why ? What can I do to correct it?

i'm guessing your shafts aren't the correct spine.

Thanks for the suggestion kyhuntertoo but I worked with a nationally ranked target shooter to achieve perfect flight at my drawlength and style. My pretty arrow flight is often commented on by other shooters when shooting our local 3d range and at local competitions, and when they don't fly well it's always easily attributable to some screw up in my technique. Is it possible that by going from a 125gr field point to a 125gr broadhead I need to actually change my arrow spine?

In the old days the rule of thumb around here was shoot  a least a 5# heavier spined shalf when shooting broadheads. Seemed to work .
Don't know if that would help you or not.
Good luck!

Haven't had that problem since I started bare-shaft tuning. If your broadheads and field points don't shoot together, it's probably spine related. You can't trust field point performance alone if you always shoot with fletching on your arrows. They can look perfect, but broadheads really tell the tale.

Had a friend that was using the field point as a concentration point when aiming, when he switched over to broadheads he actually was using one of the blades as a concentration point and moved his groups over and down about 4". Might be worth looking at.

Your broadhead is longer than your field point, it changes the spine of your arrow and your sight picture.  Bill

I was alternately shooting 3 arrows with field points, then 3 arrows with broadheads (sameweight). Turned out it was two things causing my low right problem. One was, even though I consider myself an instinctive shooter, I am aware of the arrow tip in my peripheral vision and I when I was shooting the longer broadhead, as opposed to my field tip, it caused me to aim lower, resulting in low hits. Also turns out raising my brace height 1/4" fixed the arrow hitting 3" right of where my field points were hitting. I'm good to go now, critters beware...
I thank everyone who weighed in on this, both here and on PowWow, especially wtpops and Jeff Strubberg, who were on the money.
