Quick Release
« on: July 14, 2009, 12:48:00 PM »
First, let me say that I've been working with the "T" method that Terry preaches, and have seen a real improvement in my shooting.  Of course, it also helps me with the weakness in my left shoulder after surgery that I'm trying to strengthen.  The "T" method takes some of the stress on my shoulder away.  The other thing I'm having trouble with is a quick release.  I started shooting traditional over 25 years ago to get away from the compounds with all the gadgets.  I was struggling with a severe case of target panic.  I had went thru the releases and sights and was shooting barebow by using the arrow as my sight.  I would also face-walk to adjust for yardage.  But, the target panic just continued to get worse until it came to the point that I just couldn't shoot anymore.  I switched to traditional and shot totally instinctive.  The only thing I did was focus on the spot I wanted to hit.  So, when I hit anchor, the arrow was gone.  And, that's the way I shoot now.  If I make myself hold anchor for any length of time, I find myself becoming aware of the arrow, and I lose my accuracy.  I relate shooting instinctive to throwing a baseball, no aiming.  You just look at the spot, and throw it there.  Any pause is a break in the flow, or motion, which plays havoc on accuracy.  Anyway, am I wrong on this, or does anybody have any input for me.

i just recently started with trad and used to shoot the same way. pretty good groups also! i read a few books, read here on line and started to pause at full draw and my shooting improved greatly. it gives me a another chance to really concnetrate on the target. Basically i draw, make sure i have a good anchor and form, once this is done i know i can let the arrow go! i also shoot instictive, bu the pause at the last minute just lets me re-focus on the spot one last time. seems to work for me.

On a side note...i was shooting with a few older guys at the Whittingham shoot in new jersey that "snap shoot" and these guys were MONEY! so if it works for you and your more accurate you may want to stick with it.

It it aint broke don't fix it.

Some are better off holding, and some are better off not.  Find what works best for you.

After a time, you can practice holding and you wont waiver your concentration.  Sometimes in the field you are forced to hold so its best to at least practice it on occasion.

Glad to hear your recovery is coming around.

Have fun.
