Can this be right??!!??
« on: September 05, 2009, 12:00:00 PM »
I am pulling 55 lbs @ 27" with my Robertson Stykbow.  I have been struggling with arrow flight with a couple of dozen 55 -60 spined poc shafts.  Every shot was coming off of the string nock high and porpoised to the target.  My nock point was set at 5/8" above the shelf and I was nocking below the point.  This configuration just looked high to me and I decided to mess around with the nock point so I moved my arrow down.  Things went south so I decided just for grins to move up.  Well I nocked my arrow above the brass nock point already set at 5/8" high which would make my nock point 7/8" inches above the shelf if I nocked my arrow  below the brass nock.  To my surprise, I got perfect arrow flight!!  But it just dont look right to me as I look at it from the side with the arrow nocked on the string and sitting on the shelf.  Looks all kicked up in the back if you know what I mean.  My question to you all is "Can tnis be the right nock point?".  Thanks and I am still learning this traditional game but am having a blast again.  The compounds seem boring and I am wanting to go strictly traditional.  Thanks for your help in this matter and sorry for being so long-winded!!

A nock point of 3/4 to 7/8 would be normal for a 3 under shooter.  In fact, if you nock lower than that you can get a false high, where the arrow is bouncing off the shelf and showing nock high whereas it is really nock low.  The only way you can determine where your nock point should be is to initially nock high enough that you are sure you are getting a true nock high, and work your way down from there.

A nock point of 7/8 would be a little high for a split finger shooter.  In that case, I would look for form problems.  In order to get good arrow flight, whether dealing with weak/stiff shaft issues, or porpoising issues, you need to have solid form, where you are coming to full draw (meaning that your drawing forearm is lined up with the arrow viewed from above), and continuing to pull with good back tension until the arrow is released (meaning that your drawing hand moves backwards on release, and not to the side).  If you are shooting split fingers, and your drawing elbow is too high, viewed from the side, it can cause your index finger to press down on the arrow, which will cause it to bounce on release and you won't get good arrow flight.

....could also just be the bow. Most of the bows I've had over the years shoot best with a 5/8 to 9/16 nock point. But I have had at least 2 that needed 3/4 to 7/8 to shoot strait....no big deal. Its not like the TRADPOLICE are going to confiscate your bow if the nocks too high ,or your arrows too long, or to many/big silencers, or broadheads not aliegned with your fletching, or any other trivial thing. Just shoot, have fun, keep it simple!

Not really worried about any of that HH just new to the game and wondering if something was "Wrong" with my bow that's all.  Thanks for your input, it is appreciated.

Kenkel, could you be underspined with those shafts? It's possible to get an underspined shaft to shoot better by raising the nocking point. I suggest trying a stiffer arrow.

Thanks Don and yes I guess it could be possible.  But I have two different bundles of 55-60 splined shafts from different suppliers that shot the same.  By the way, I switched to three under and am absolutely amazed at what I am doing out there.  The arrows are flying absolutely perfect with no wobble at all and I am getting consistent groups out to 25 yards with some pretty good ones thrown in at 30.  I feel like I can hit what I am looking at right now.  Good stuff, thanks Tradgang for the help!!
