bareshaft-nock high?
« on: October 04, 2009, 12:12:00 PM »
Ok I swore I wasn't going to worry about this as my hunting trip very near and I hate to start working of my form. The other day I thought I'd shoot a bare shaft. The arrow flight is straight but 4in nock high. I lowered my nock point but no effect. It has to be my form, I shoot split finger and I'm thinking my pressure points must be wrong, I'm just guessing here, and wondering if any of you that have bareshafted and can give me some tips on how to correct- Steve

Where are your fletched arrows landing in relationship to your bare shafts?

Was your nocking point high enough to begin with?

I set the centre of my target at shoulder height,
and have my arrows "level" when testing nock height...
target distance about 10 yards for this purpose.

Make  small  changes in nock set position.

A simple stick-on elevated rest (like a Bear WeatherRest) can do wonders for achieving decent fletch clearance too.

Old York, I went to that site and notice it said it's extremely important to have your arrow contacting your rest in the correct spot. Might have to look at that as my rest is pretty worn.

I had my nocking point around 5/8 and moved it down in small increment untill I was level and still nock high. Just for the heck of it I pulled out an old compound release and the arrow flew perfect, not a good test I suppose as fingers are not the same but it made me think that i was doing something wrong.

In relationship to fletched the are hitting perfect horizontally. The nock is dead center of bullseye but the point is entering a good 4in below.- Steve

Here are some points to consider.
1.  Brace height, start with recommended then lower 1" and start, shoot and raise until you find a point where it sounds and shoots best. Twisting a flemish string 10 turns will raise Brace Ht. about 1/4 inch.
2.  Check spine chart. See shooters forum and topic of interactive spine chart vs spine selector for links.
3.  Shoot thru paper. Set up a box frame with paper (newspaper or heavier). Set at shoulder height in front of bales or backstop and stand about 10 ft. from paper and shoot a fletched arrow and watch for direction of tear. Then bare shaft. If the point is low and tear is up, then lower the nocking point. Continue until it is leaving just a hole.
4.  To determine if the arrow is hitting the shelf, put a little shaving powder, or baby powder on and around the shelf.
5.  Check your nocks, if they are tight, use sandpaper to open, or switch to a different nock.
6.  Recheck your form and equipment.
