Advantage????????
« on: November 11, 2009, 08:19:00 PM »
I am considering going to a three under anchor as the bow I am shooting right now seems to be much more user friendly with that style.I normally anchor split, with the middle finger in the corner of my mouth. Right now I am shooting a short Grizzly(56"),and it really seems to calm down when I go to three under.I still use the middle finger as my indicator.

My question is this, If one was to totally switch over to 3 under,is there an advantage getting a bow that is built for 3 under,or would it not matter.

  Thanks for any advice.

I've never shot split.  I've also never owned a bow tillered for 3under.

I can't tell the difference when shooting between the two types of tiller.  I shoot 3 under.

Most modern bows work fine either way.  To get the same arrow flight using 3 under that you got with split, you will have to raise the nock point some, maybe 1/8" or more.  If you have a bow that is tillered for a high nock point already with split fingers, it may be unacceptably high with 3 under.

If you plan to shoot a bow 3 under, it is an advantage to have it tillered that way, as the nock point will be about 5/8", which is ideal.  Some people say that a bow tillered for split fingers is noisier when shot 3 under, but those people must have better ears than I do (which wouldn't be difficult).

Craig,  I have noticed one thing over the years and that is people new to trad. archery seem to shoot much better with three under, noticed alot of shooters in my winter league who switched over and picked it up very fast.  Not sure why maybe looking down the arrow or some derivative of that.

I play with 3 under and will probably switch.  All the bows I have had made more noise 3 under with a split tiller.  I did find that using a larger silencer on one end of the string helped that.

Guys,
Thank you all for the input.Every now and then,
and it seems it is always a shorter bow, I come across one that will only shoot for me if I go to 3
under. Then when I start to shoot that way I find myself kind of liking it. I have shot split my
whole life, but the last few years I have been playing around with the 3 under.Maybe it is my glasses, bifocals have become reality the last two
prescriptions,who knows.
But back to the main question..... if I do order a new bow, or would happen to buy a used one, I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile to go with one that was built specifically for three under. Thanks again,

HI CRAIG,
I SHOT SPLIT ALL MY LIFE BUT AFTER WATCHING A RICK WELCH VID, I SWITCHED, FOR A WHILE.
LIKE YOU FOUND, ALL MY BOWS WERE NOISIER 3 UNDER, SO I SWITCHED BACK BUT I TRY TO APPLY HIS OTHER TECHNIQUES AND MY SHOOTING HAS IMPROVED MORE IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS THAN IN THE LAST 6 YEARS.
TAKE CARE AND HAVE GREAT THANKSGIVING.

"if I do order a new bow, or would happen to buy a used one, I was just wondering if it would be worthwhile to go with one that was built specifically for three under."

If you plan to shoot both ways for a while until you decide, tell the bowyer if you order a new bow.  He can tiller the bow so it is sort of in between split and 3 under, so it should shoot well with either.

If you buy a used bow and it bare shafts well at a nock point of 3/8 - 1/2 for split fingers, then the nock point for 3 under will be about 5/8, and it should work fine.  If you buy a used bow where the nock point for split fingers is above 5/8, then the nock point for 3 under may be unacceptably high.

Hey Ray,
How you doing, well I hope.I hear you, sold my Voodoo Stick and picked up a short Grizzly the
following day.I was trying to get on to it quick so that I would feel good about using it this last
week of archery.I was shooting it ok with split,
every now and then a lousy shot. So for whatever reason(unhappy with the lousy shots),I started shooting it three under. It made a difference with
this bow.
Anyhow, good to hear from you,and who knows....
I may just be shooting three under next time I see you.
