Thoughts/Help??
« on: November 23, 2009, 07:15:00 PM »
Frustrating!!!!  But fun..   :o )  I have been shooting a long bow for a little over a month now.  At times I see a little improvement and others I seem to regress.  Over the last week or so i quit focusing and just started snap shooting (basically knocked my arrow and didn't look at my spot/target until I was drawing and relesed when I hit my anchor) and wow!!!  I have been shooting a lot better..  BUT..  Went with a buddy and shot a tech screen Saturday and was awful?  Kept shooting left.  So tonight I shoot and am right back to good.  Think about the difference and in the tech shoot I have the bow up waiting for shot opportunity then draw and shoot.  So I did that on my target tonight and sure enough left?  Couldn't change it?  Any ideas of what I might be doing?
Sorry to be long winded...

My first month was ten years ago so can't remember. But I do remember I wasn't very good yet. Some people pick it up a lot faster than others. I can tell you this, it is far too early for you to start being frustrated I bet it took you longer than a month to hit the basket everytime from the free throw line. Or hit the catchers mitt from the mound. So hang in there man you'll get if you don't give up.As far as your question you might PM AspirinBuster and ask him, he really knows his stuff.

There are a lot of things that can cause you to miss left.  Particularly with a long bow, it is important to maintain a little bend in the bow arm.  Locking your bow arm can cause you to miss left.  Torqueing the string can cause you to miss left.  Not getting your dominant eye over the arrow can cause you to miss left.  Pressing your face against your string hand at full draw can move your string hand to the right and cause you to miss left.  Having an arrow that is too stiff for your bow could cause you to miss left, but this would happen regardless of where you're shooting.  There are other things that could cause you to miss left, but you should probably eliminate these things first.

Thanks for the posts guys..  Trust me sssnap I mean it when I say it is a fun frustrated.  I am having a blast with this thing.

McDave  -  Thanks for the ideas.  Think the locking of the bow arm could be the most of it.  Was out playing with that shortly after making the post and it seemed to make some difference.

From my experience, I have noticed that whenever a change comes about whether it is physical (maybe a change in form) or mental (shooting in front of  a crowd or jhust shooting outside your normal comfort area), left misses for a right handed archer occur. Most of the time this represents a collapse to some degree which is caused by the distraction. Because of the collapse, the arrow reacts stiff and a left miss occurs.
