right hand vs left hand
« on: November 29, 2009, 04:26:00 PM »
i started shooting traditional about 2 years ago and loved it. with no one to teach me some of the finer things of this wonderfull sport i had difuculty with getting the accurcy where it needed to be. so i learned that i was left eye dominant. the question is are there tecniques that will allow me to shoot right handed? i can't afford to buy a good bow right now and am forced to shoot a cheap lefty. although the acuracy has improved it is hard to get left handed gear. any thoughts help.

Why do you want to shoot right handed if you're left eye dominant?

It seems that there are more options for right handed bows. I am fairly new at this thing and teaching myself. I can certainly learn Left but it seems awkward.

Once you learn right hand will feel awkward.

I have heard that some cover the dominant eye making the other eye take dominance.

Thanks Amazonjim, I guess I'll just stick it out and give it more time.

The awkward feeling goes away I am right handed and so I started shooting right handed. I am also left eye dominant and have just started the transition to left handed. I too have better grouping shooting left handed. It is nice for me to be able to shoot left and right because I also build bows. The man that is teaching me to build them is left hand/eye so he can not shoot the right handed bows he builds so I am now the test dumby.

Go with the dominat eye. It will be a lot more fun when you hit what you are looking at.

These guys re correct.  I made the switch from a right handed wheel bow to a left handed recurve bck in 05.  I can shoot both ways...but lefty is better.  Truthfully it took two weeks to be able to hold a groug switching to lefty.  Yea..it felt wierd but I could do it.  The awkwardness went away in a few months.  Just take your time, it will all come together and it waill be worth every minute you put into it.

While on the subject...

Ever read these threads where a guy practices all summer and then misses any number of deer in the heat of the moment?  I'll bet money they are not shooting with thier dominant eye.  In the heat of the moment...your dominant eye is going to take over.

thanks Scarne.
I never thought about the whole "heat of the moment" thing. But that's a pretty good point.

i have been lefthanded for 38 years now. i have learned from playing guitar that being left handed is somewhat of a handicap. so i felt that being "new" to anything, what did i have to loose? in the beginning we all suck. so when i learned to golf i learned right handed. and shooting my bows, guess what? right handed. i shoot firearms both ways. the truth is, we were far more adaptable than we give ourselves credit for. i am left handed/right eye dominant. i shoot long guns left handed off left eye. i shoot pistols left handed right eye. archery right handed/ right eye. and i CAN shoot left handed archery. stay with it, you CAN do anything.

forgot to mention, the number one to try to play the right handed game is cost and selection. i have played very few left handed guitars in my life. but i have shot many right handed bows and swumg many right handed golf clubs. i just plain out got tired of loking for a left handed pool cue! it's a right handed world, face it.

Thanks Mikieg,
I've now been shooting 4-5 times a week for the last couple of weeks and it seems to be getting more and more comforable.
It seems like I will get it under control before long.
Also the deeper I dig the more options I find.

After about 36 years of shooting right handed I switched to left. It takes about two months. I am now shoting better than ever. Stick to it, it will come around.
