Humbled already!!!!
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:59:00 PM »
I've just been shooting traditional for about a month now and been shooting in my basement at 9 yards and have been busting nocks so I'm thinking instinctive trad shooting isnt so hard and I'm a natural.

Well went to a 3d shoot today with 30 targets scoring 10, 8 and 5 and put up a blistering 168    "[dntthnk]"   actually lost 3 arrows.

Obviously need a lot more practice with longer shots than 9 yards. Anyhow I'm not discouraged and look forward to get out and practice even more.  Ive got a lot of fun work to do before Oct. 1 here in MI.
More bows than I should have!

Your experience is normal-- Actually 168 is not all that bad for the first time on 3D.  You've practiced shooting indoors at 9yds. and you've gotten real good at it.  Now, you need to practice outdoors at different ranges. If you can, the best thing is to set up a simulated  course-- Three targets (cardboard sillouettes are fine) and three diff. shooting stakes at each.  This will give you 9 diff. shots.  If you set them up in a triangle like course, that you can just rotate through. -- If you practice everyday for a few months, you'll likely be breaking 200. Large part of 3D is a "head game" you play w/yourself-you'll learn that as you go. No reason to be discouraged-- your going to have alot of fun learning this kind of shooting.  Its the quality of the journey that counts.  Just have fun, stay relaxed and enjoy the process--you'll learn faster that way anyway.

What you practice is what you learn.  That 9yd. ability is going to serve you well on sm. game -like rabbit and squirrel!  -- Actually, more fun to hunt than deer.IMO

Yep,what chuck said.
Winning or losing is not the important thing,,the important thing is how well you played the game.

Having fun is what it's all about. I go to shoots and some times I don't even score myself. On the times I do, I score every target as a kill shot (any shot that would kill, such as a heart, lung, or liver shot), gut shot that would kill the animal but might be unrecoverable, a wound shot (one that the animal would more than likly survive), and a miss. The kill shots I count as 10, gut shots I subtract 12, wound shots I subtract 10, and a clean miss is free. One of the guys that introduced me to traditional archery tought me that. The first time I shot a course I ended up in the hole 52 points. It was a great time. keep up the practice and remember have fun.

good luck.

Tradhunter makes a good pt.  I've always objected to the rewarding of wounding shots on 3D courses.  I don't know that a penalty is justified as about 40% of the shots are not ones most would take at live game.-- but if you do not intend to turn your card in, it frees you up, to shoot the course the way it is most fun for you. Ive noticed more &more trad. archers taking this approach to 3D. Have fun, pick your own shots - a stake is nothing more than a suggestion to me, and more often than not I create my own shot that is of more interest to me.

we had a shoot once that was similar to what tradhunter was talking about. if you hit in the vitals you got plus 5 anything else you got minus 3. i scored a 37. definately don't let it get you down, and have fun at the next one.
