Beating target panick and building form
« on: February 25, 2010, 06:59:00 PM »
I've dropped down to 45# -50# bows at 28" and have been spending the winter beating a horrible case of target panick that caused me to short draw something awful.  I'm also rebuilding my form from scratch and establishing a new anchor point.  I now have a 29" draw after dropping in weight and focusing on 2 anchor points (1. thumb knuckle behind ear; & 2. feather in corner of mouth.)  Those anchor points just seem the easiest and most natural for me and they line up my bow arm and drawing hand/elbow perfect.  In order to beat the habit of releasing just before reaching anchor I have been practicing overdrawing and holding it with the feather almost touching my ear and then letting down.  It sounds kinda wierd but it has really worked wonders for me the last 2 days that I've been trying it.  I haven't been shooting at anything over 15 yds and most of my shooting has been at 5yds in my garage most of the winter except for a couple stump/squirrel shooting outings where I shot out to 40 to 45yds.  So I can't really say it has improved my shooting but it has helped me improve my form and consistency and be able to not only reach but hold at full draw.  Now here's the down side.  I notice I feel the string hit me in the chest when I shoot so I put on a heavy hunting jacket and it really seemed to interfere with the shot.  I need to play around a little more but I'm affraid I'm overdrawing a little on the shot and that's causing the interference with the string while wearing bulky clothes.   Sorry so long winded I wanted to point out things that are helping my form and to beat target panick and to ask and see if maybe I should shorten my draw lenght and choose anchors that won't be affected by heavy clothes.

after reading Rob's post I should change all words above that say "anchor point" to "reference point" as that is really what they are since I don't stop drawing.  That may also explain why I'm hitting my chest; because I keep drawing too far after I reach my "reference point".  No way for me to know as I don't have a video or anyone to watch me.  I'll learn more after my move to WS, NC since there is a good trad community there.
