Jim Belcher + Terry Green= alot of help!
« on: March 28, 2010, 07:02:00 PM »
Shooting my bow has become one of my favorite pastimes. However in my zeal for knowledge, and desire to "master the barebow"I think i have made shooting too complicated.    Let me explain..I have tried so many methods of shooting, read so many opinions, and watched so many videos shooting the bow has become frustrating. I have been in a slump lately. I have tried so many different methods of shooting i have forgotten what i know.(if that makes sense   :(  )  After calling Jim Belcher this week and talking about one of his bows and explaining a few of my problems he gave me some great advice..."go out and start over at 10 yards and just start shooting some arrows " After several minutes of talking he hit on several other points that made the lightbulb go on     Basically he told me to start enjoying myself again and to apply the KISS principle.(keep it simple stupid) If you watch his shooting videos he is shooting all different bows, mixed weight, length and spined arrows, and puttin em right in there. Then i went back and reviewed some of Terry Greens videos, and read some of his posts about shooting and canting the bow.If you watch both of these guys the shooting just looks "natural". Well this week i went back to basics and applied some of the things i learned from them both, grabbed a handful of different arrows and basically cleared my mind. Well i'll be darned started puttin em in there all out to 25yards. I even shot the reverse cant succesfully. Now i know that tuning for the best performance with broadheads is crucial and i will. But for now it is about clearing out alot of the "white noise and enjoying shooting again. So a big Thank you to you both.

Just shoot baby!

I've gone through the same thing.  Try this, try that, try the other thing, and my shooting went to h--l.  I've always shot my best snap shooting, but so many folks say you need to hold. Sorry, it just doesn't work for me.  Read some posts by Terry about his method and snap shooting and I finally realized it's OK to snap shoot if it works for you.  Quit thinking and just put the dang arrow where it's supposed to go!

Forget about everything, think about hitting the dot you have picked out in the center of the target! Pick that tiny dot and shoot thru the middle of it! Clear your mind before drawing! Pick a hair!! Ken

Whatever feels natural to you is how you should shoot! Pick a spot!

Going through that process right now myself.  Thought I needed to shoot a tab, thought I needed to shoot three under, thought I needed to change my anchor point, thought I "needed" to do too much.  Well after about 3 or 4 weeks of struggling, the other day I put on my old glove, put my nock point back down, grabbed some AD trads and started slamming them in there!  Heck I was even able to bare shaft the AD out to 30 yards!  For the last month I struggled to get fletched shafts into the target at 20 to 25 yards.

The best part was....It was fun again!  Not sure why I felt the need to complicate this simplistic beautiful sport of trad archery.

Good luck to you Maxfit

My shooting feel to pieces in fall 2007. I've been obsesively practicing trying to get over it. My slump has last over 3 years. I keep changing bows, form, and style. Recely switched bows, started footing from split finger to three under, changed from swing draw to set arm, snap shooting to holding 3 seconds, instinctive to gap, point of aim, split vision, you name it I'm trying it. My wife, who knows very little about archery, tells me I over analyze the act of shooting. Huh! Maybe I just need to relax and have fun with it again?

Thanks Travis.
DP, i have done evrything you have done and really shot  o.k. with each switch. I have given one method  a full year, and shot well enough to hunt with it, but really no significant improvement. So i kept a few points i liked that i learned over the last 2 years, (3 under and a swing draw) and adapted them to MY style and bingo....i have found that drawing, anchoring and holding works well for me ..sometimes. I shoot better with a faster release and follow thru.I dont think about "when to release or finding the magic anchor''

Beeing new to archery, I can already tell that this sport can be a total disaster to learn. There seems to be so many styles of shooting that work well for different people.

For myself, I have chosen a style that suits me & what I want to accomplish. I'm not looking to be a world class target shooter. I'm more focused on hunting & just shooting targets for fun & practace. So, I have chose to learn to shoot instinctivly with a fairly quick release, not sure if I snap shoot or hold, to me it doesn't matter, both ways have been proven.

I'm just going to take bits & pieces from everything & create my own personal style that works for me.......... but I must admit, it's always in the back of my mind to try something different to get better. I just try to clear my mind & stare at what I want to hit.

Heres hoping I don't get sucked into a slump

Yes...you can over alylize everything.

Once you identify a problem, you should isolate it and work on just it concsiously without worrying about 'aiming'.....and groove the correct way into your stystem.

Once you get issues solved one at a time, your subconsious shouls run the shot while you focus on aiming....how ever you choose to aim.

Getting proper alignment solves so many issues,...it the back yard and in the field.

Glad your shooting is coming around.

Jim is a great guy. I shoot a Belcher bow and have had the pleasure of shooting with him.  He is a true master of the bare bow.  He also makes a phenominal bow.
