wood arrow spine

I have a robertson longbow that shoots 55 @ 28 and am having trouble finding the right spine.  Can someone tell me what spine I should shoot.  BTW Carbon 5575 with 300 grain upfront still shoot to stiff, to the left.  Can someone help?

I have two robertsons both 51 at 26, I can get by with 45s cut to 26" with 125 grains up front on my lefty but not on the right hander.  When my son shoots my bow he draws about 27.5" the bow is then about 56 to 57 pounds, he uses his 65 pound spine arrows cut to 28.25" with 160 grain points and they fly perfect.

I would suggest that you go with wood arrows….Port Orford Cedar IMO is a great choice…

The shafts have a very consistant  weight per inch ( which makes for very uniform arrow balance) and come in 11/32" AND 23/64TH" AND CAN BE tappered and also footed which can add weight both rear and front. And also insure bow window clearance upon release.

Spine is usually not an issue as they come in various ranges. They are designated with two weights ie. 55/60, 60/65, 65/70 etc. So you should be able to match your arrows to the bow.

I used to shoot a longbow and found Premium Port Orford Cedar to be my top choice. Also, they smell great …LOL

Whump Sez: What length did you cut your shafts? I shot carbon last year for the first time and had always shot wood from my long bow. I shoot 5575 goldtips [30" from back of point to throat of nock] with 200gns up front from a 54lb@28 r@d long bow and they are flying right down the middle.Unless you cut those shafts off really short you should be getting good flight. What were you shooting or is this a new bow that you are just trying to tune?? I am not busting on you here but have you had someone check to make sure you are drawing 28 and have you pulled the bow with scales to your anchor point to see what the poundage is at your draw length and anchor point? How far to the left are we talking about? If it it is only a few inches[2]at 25yds you can add a twist or 2 to your string and raise your brace height which will improve a stiff arrow problem if it is not too bad.  Give us a little more info--when you started shooting what was going on? did you keep adding point weight or did you start out with 300gn ?. Are you shooting with a loose grip or tight? Arrow length? Fast flight or B50 string ? Arrows hitting to the left --how far to the left at what yardage?  More info please. Hunt safe.

Whump, I shot this longbow for about a year and gave up and bought a recurve.  The longbow I started with 5575 carbons and cut them down during the tuning process.  My draw length is 27.5 inches so I am shooting 29 inch arrows from throat of the nock to the tip of the insert.  since the arrows continued to shoot left decreasing from 2 feet at 15 yards to about 6" as I added weight to 300 grains.  It still hits 6" left bare shaft and fletched.  Bare and fletched hit in the same spot.  I have played with brace hieght. so I conluded I need much less spine.  BTW I shoot split finger my form is pretty good and I can shoot my recurve consistantely in the kill zone to 25 yards.  You may say so what is the problem shoot the recurve.  Well I hate to have a bow that I can't get to shoot well.

Whump Sez: Thanks for the info. With your [27.5] draw and the shafting cut to [29] I agree you are on the stiff side. Since you started out with light point weight and added weight which continued to draw the shots toward center you are up for a lighter spine, and eliminates a galse spine reading.  Your statements about your recurve eliminated any ides I had about your grip or release. The 4555,s should solve your problem but I would hook a set of scales to the longbow and pull it to your anchor and check to see what poundage you are holding. The carbon gets stiff quick so start with full length shafting and go slow with the chopping.  Hunt safe.
