What's your shot sequence?
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:38:00 AM »
The Hickory shoot a couple of weeks ago was a real eye opener for me.  I realized that I flat out suck.  With all the other hobbies and tinkering I've been doing I haven't taken the time to shoot nearly enough.  I've decided to commit to the blind bale as much as possible and shooting more in general.  I understand that one of the keys to good shooting is a repeatable shot sequence.  I figure there's no sense in reinventing the wheel, so would anyone be willing to share their shot sequence?

Thanks

Body alignment to target - bow grip - string grip - bow arm aimed/pointed at smallest spot I can focus on - shoulders back to expand chest for proper alignment - rotational draw to anchor and keep pulling - adjust for elevation/distance - release (working on learning to just relax the hand) and hold post release position for at least two seconds to analyze.  Hopefully kill the spot....lol.

Make sure you practice your routine enough at the bale, until you're not thinking of every step while you're doing it. Otherwise, instead of a constant, fluid motion, and instead of concentrating on your spot, you'll be focused on the individual steps.

Address the target, inhale while raising bow and drawing, exhale half while concentrating on the spot in the center of the target, pause at anchor, release, lower bow arm.

1. Set feet.

2. Nock arrow.

(For 3D shooting, insert "Estimate distance," and "Glass target" here.)

3. Set fingers properly on string.

4. Set bow hand properly on grip.

5. Pick a spot.

6. Draw.

7. Anchor.

8. Set gap.

9. Push/pull/expand to conclusion.

1. Set my Feet
2. Drop arms and take a deep relaxing breath
3. Nock arrow
4. Set Fingers on the string
5. Set grip
6. Pick the smallest possible spot on the target
7. Raise bow arm and concentrate on that spot
8. Draw bow to anchor, middle finger in the corner of the mouth and thumb on top of the back of my jaw, concentrate on the spot
9. Expand draw till my thumb drops in behind my jaw bone, maintaining my deep hooks till it does, concentrate on that spot
10. Slide hand under ear lobe and thumb on top of my shoulder, letting my bow arm drop a little and go left and hold for 2 seconds
11. Watch that arrows nock drill that spot (hopefully     )

If I mess up somewhere along the way, I go to the blind bale. Good luck!

I believe in KISS. Extend left arm out fully, focus on spot, draw bow, anchor, release, watch arrow hit spot. I try to not have more than one shooting thought in my head when I shoot and lately it is extending left arm fully as I've been not doing that.

Now think about what you do when a live deer is the target.

I do one of two things - slowly raise the bow (if the deer is moving this may be some time ahead of the shot) and align the arrow then draw the arrow straight back with minimal vertical or horizontal movement.

Or raise fast and shoot as soon as I hit full draw.

So I also practice both of these.  I shoot best doing the former - but usually get accused of aiming or gap shooting when I do it that way.

You really need to just find what works for you and perfect it.  Sometimes when I'm having an off day, I shoot worse when I start thinking too much and try to emulate somebody else's form I saw or read about.  There's some good advice on this form, but just remember everyone is different.  Don't fall into the trap thinking that you have to shoot a certain way. Find what works for you and you can repeat each shot and have fun.

Everyone’s shot process is going to be a bit different, the main thing you want to do is develop a series of processes that you can easily repeat in a stress situation. Start with addressing the target.. This can mean a lot of things but for me it is identifying and deciding on the spot I want to hit. Then arrange my body so that I have the best possible platform to shoot from with the least body tension, this can vary greatly with the terrain and situation.  I want to feel the nock as it slides on the string and if it doesn’t feel right I will not shoot that arrow. I want to put my hand in the bow handle exactly the same each time. It is surprising how much this has to do with accuracy. I feel my fingers wrap around the bow string fitting into a familiar place each time. As I raise the bow I feel my shoulder drop down and my arm extended but no tension in the muscles or elbow. As I rotate my upper body back to parallel to my hips and knees (if situational positioning allow) I feel my drawing arm scapular drop into position and the load of the bow is solely on the back, my arms are relaxed with no muscle tension… I’ve felt the string roll a bit as I drew, settling the arrow tight against the strike plate and fitting into the groove in my fingertips. As I reach full draw the string settles into a familiar place against my nose and my index finger finds its place on my upper eyetooth, at this point I continue to pull feeling the load in my back as my focus falls entirely to the small spot I’ve picked as my target, my eyes, my thoughts are all focused on that spot as I release the final bit of tension in the back of my hand and fingers I feel the string rip from my finger tips and the brush of those fingers against my cheek and finally to my shoulder.. My eyes have never left the spot I want the arrow to hit, as I keep my focus on that spot the arrow appears and I see the last few feet of its flight as if in my peripheral vision, my head has not moved, my eye has not wandered, my bow arm has recoiled from the load but I have not lowered it or looked away from the spot I wanted to hit.. As I see the arrow sink into my target I think… that felt right…

Close eyes, pull back and let go and

Just kidding, I usually focus, exhale, draw then let go as I pull through my reference point; if I think about it too much it usually makes me worse, kinda like a golf shot    :)

I usually start out my practice blind baling a few arrows to focus on my form then I move back to 20 yards.

1. Set feet
2. Nock arrow
3. Raise my left arm
4. Take a deep breath
5. Draw slowly
6. Anchor
7. Release
8. Follow threw
