does anyone else shoot better if the target is an object that is 3 dimensional rather than 2 dimensional? if i shoot at a paper plate with a red circle drawn on it and tack it to my hay bale. i don't do too well. but... if i take a small ball(golf ball size)and hang it from a string in front of the hay bale, i will hit it consistantly or get very close and my arrows are in a nice tight group. the same applies if i take a ball that i use(grapefruit size). i throw the ball on the ground and using judos i will consistantly hit it or get very very close. why am i so bad with the 2 dimensional targets? don

Hey Don..
Some colors are more distracting then others, they can take your focus off your intended target.
White is hard on the eyes so you could try cardboard or a different color backstop.

If you put the paper plate in front of the swinging object you may get the same results as before.

I also shoot swinging targets because they do help in building hand/eye co-ordination.
I should also mention that swinging into your target from the four positions (from above, below left side and right side) will improve your accuracy even farther. And it won't matter the target whether it's 2d or 3d..

i don't think it's the color. also, i'm not swinging the target. i hang it there just so there is depth to the target. i shoot at the rubber ball thats on the ground. it's not a moving target, it's 3 dimensional though. a paper plate or any paper target no matter the color is just a 2 dimensional flat target. for some reason, i don't do well with those type targets. don

Just a suggestion, try it or not. Incorporate the swinging target in your practice route. Shoot at 3-5 yds at the smallest target you can see.You'll see results in minutes and you also be a more rounded archer.

im actually the oposite i shoot better on flat big targets than a 3-d target, but im sure bowsanairos advise will work both ways.

my problem is not with the 3 dimensional targets. i can hit them. my question is why can't i do as well when i'm shooting at paper? do you think it has to do with depth? don

i just read the topic "concentration help" and realized the answer to my question is right there. hanging that little ball gives the target some depth and allows me to pick a spot. shooting the ball that i toss on the ground also makes me pick a spot. don

I am also more accurate with three dimensional targets, can't explain it. My main flat target is a Spydrco large block, it's white with red spiders drawn on it. If I take a brown leaf and stick it on the target @ 20yds. I pretty much hit it every time, if I try to hit one of the red spiders I don't do so well.

I think BowsanArios has a good point with the colors and concentration.

I bought a block target that has five white dots on it, about 4 inches in diameter, I go from spot to spot and then decide which one I want to hit and concentrate on it helped me alot with target panic and picking the spot. I think it implements Jay Kidwells training skills by moving and choosing your target. Helped me alot with premature release.

I have found that the smaller the target the better I shoot. Take the paper cut a circle out of it about the size of a tennis ball see how well you shhot that. I will often pot a 1 1/2 inch dot on my deer target and I have that spot to shoot at rather than the whole target.

I think I'm having the same problem as you Don. I almost started a new thread then decided to read through yours.

I am shooting the Tradgang Fun Shoot on Pow-wow and I'm getting worse and worse. Went through several things to try and work it out.

I thought it might be my wood arrows in the high humidity. A few years ago I was shooting maple shafts in July and was very frustrated. That's the first time I tried carbons and saw a huge improvement. That's not it this time with my POC's.

Just tried shooting at the 3-D without the paper plate and saw marked improvement. I think it's the white target. I'll try to draw the circles on cardboard and see if there is a difference.

Don i'm the same way. I like shooting small golf balls and the like. I also can group better around a broken arrow sticking out of the target

I agree with Doug G - the smaller the target the better I shoot.  The real challenge for me is visualizing a small enough target on game.
