torquing arrow at full draw
« on: July 06, 2011, 12:31:00 PM »
I shoot split finger and when i come to full draw I have been told that my arrow is torqued/bent down wards. I guess that im putting to much down ward pressure with my fingers and its causing the arrow to bend. Also I use 2 brass nocks on my string and after a while the top nock usually comes loose and seperates.Im sure this is effecting my shooting. I anchor to the cornor of my mouth and on video I can see that my wrist is bent down ward and my elbow is a little above level. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how did you correct.

Thanks

I've never had that problem or knew anyone with it, but it would seem to me that if your wrist is bent down you could be putting too much pressure on the string with you middle and ring finger causing the string to have a weird angle. I drew it out and can see where that angle could cause the arrow to have downward pressure and possibly exert enough force upward to cause the upper nock to have problems. I hope someone has a better answer for you as this is the only thing I could come up with. Simulate you wrist position without the bow and see what you think.   :dunno:

Gilbert,  I think that cbcrow has it right.  It sounds like you are getting way too much pressure on the top of the arrow nock with your index finger which can be caused by too stiff a wrist and too much weight on your middle and ring fingers.  Your wrist and forearm MUST be as relaxed as possible so the weight of the string at full draw aligns your hand, not the other way around.  I have a video here on the shooter's forum (second page) called "release tips", go look at that video and see if it gives you any ideas.

Also if you can post your video, it would be easier to see what you are really doing.

From what you've described it sounds like you may be a bit overbowed.
It also sounds like your middle and ring finger are taking most of the pressure when you draw the bow. You could switch to 3 under..
You may also be shooting a bow that's short, maybe 54" or shorter.. And maybe a bit more weight then you can comfortably handle..
(I'm Assuming only)
Solution:
Drop down in weight and see if that helps..5 lbs or so can make a big difference.

Sounds like to much pressure on your top and middle finger.

90% of your drawing wait should be on your middle finger.

Thanks guys,

Moebow, will take a look at video.

Im kinda of double anchoring. My middle finger hits the corner of my mouth and than my thumb nuckle rest under my ear. My second anchor is probably why im bending my wrist in a downward angle. Whick is causing all the pressure on nocks and arrow. Not sure what to do about it. Ive always shot that way, its just the way my anchor naturally happens. I guess could try different second anchor and try to relax my wrist. Not sure how it would effect arrow flight. My accuracy is okay, but would like to get better.

Bowsanario; never thought about being overbowed. I am shooting a 54 in bow.

Thanks everyone for all the help.

I noticed this same problem when I went from 64-66" longbows down to 60"ers.  I just raised my index finger 1/2" above my nock pre-draw and it solved the problem.  Arne's video on release tips should be a huge help to you in this regard as well as helping with back tension, alignment, and release.
