question and video
« on: August 16, 2011, 01:44:00 PM »
Greetings,

I have been working on not dropping my bow hand (I did it slightly on the fist shot), but my question is "Is it ok for the bow to tilt down after the shot".  I found since I have relaxed my death grip on the bow it started to tilt forward on release.

I will also welcome any other constructive criticism, although I know I need to slow down a bit and maintain back tension (works in progress).

Just focusing on bow arm now...

thanks in advance,
Greg

two,  Just focusing on your bow hand action on the shot, it appears that you have the pressure of the bow too high on your hand.  Like the web between the thumb and forefinger taking all the pressure of the bow at full draw.  That puts all the reaction there and that is above the actual center of pressure of the grip.  The shot is kind of far to really see your grip but I suspect that is what is happening.

Do a search on this forum for a thread called "grip question", I posted a series of photos there that show a grip that will help with the bow wanting to tip forward.  If you try this grip, the pressure of the bow will press into the base of your thumb (lower than it is now) and stop the forward tilt of your bow.

For what it is worth, the Olympic style shooters get the bow to roll forward like that but it is a planned move of the bow hand and not a reaction to having the center of pressure up in the deepest part of the grip (also called the pivot point).

One more video showing your bow hand up closer will help too.

See if this helps.

I just read the "grip question" thread and bingo!  I have been holding the bow against the lifeline and not with the lifeline to the right.  That makes my thumb go around too far right and put the pressure too high I guess.

In fact, I started getting a nice callous on my thumb knuckle from the grip of my Samick. I should have diagnosed the problem then, but it did not occur to me until I videod myself!  :knothead:

check out this photo and callous location on my thumb knuckle:

I will work on this!

Did anyone else see any other egregious thing for me to work on after the grip reconditioning?

thanks,

Greg

Just went back a looked at the rest of your shot Greg.  Over all pretty good I'd say.  There's no way you should have that big a callus (or any for that matter) on your bow hand.  Work on that grip and see if that doesn't solve most problems for you.

Good luck!

I shot last night and saw a definite improvement.  It will take a while for me to get used to the grip but I think it will definitely help!

Thanks a million!
