Form making huge difference in tuning help.
« on: October 26, 2011, 09:36:00 AM »
I believe this is a form release issue. Here's what's happening.
Specs 60" 51#@28" buffalo bow with SBD 8 strand padded loop string shot with glove off the shelf padded with Velcro.
Arrows 29 1/8" long 2018 Easton gamegetter with 4" parabolic RT helical feather factory insert and 145gr point.

I just got my new to me bow ( Big Jims Buffalo). In anticipation to getting this bow I built a paper tuner. So I loaded in an arrow and first one through bore a bullet hole, Great. So another and it tore point left fleth right 3" tear  The next few shots were the same except One was torn 5"
So as I read it that's stiff spine so I up it to 175gr point.
I get one bullet hole and then tears as above with point left fletch right.
So I try 200gr get one bullet and tears as above. So on to 225gr same thing 245gr and the tear is down to an 1". I focus on feeling a good release and bang, point right fletch left. ( weak)

I keep thinking how I got a bullet hole here and there.
I have really been trying to refine my form but I've only started shooting again a few months ago after decades off and I start thinking more about this being a form issue.
So I go back and discover when my release feels real nice I get a bullet hole with the 175gr heads. 4 out of the last 5 shots.
Now this makes me a bit confused. I was expecting to tune the arrows to the bow and thought that this would be something I might have to get within 5-10gr point weight and exact corect shaft length, yet just the slightest lapse in shooting  means I need an extra 70+gr upfront to offset the reduced performance from a slight off form/release?

Now it feels like if it's not feeling right bang I get a tear point left fletch right. (dynamic spine stiff).
Is that normal? I don't feel like I'm overdrawing or anything when I get a bullet hole with the 175gr points.
Btw I'm standing both 6 and 8' from the paper with the same results. Hi/lo seems spot on. Did I mention my heads spinning?   :smileystooges:

Cheers

Shawnee,

I believe you are diagnosing your problem correctly.  If you are not consistent with your form, you will likely get conflicting results in your tuning.  I would suggest, that your setup is "in the ball park"  and that you not worry too much about tuning any more than you are for right now.  Try to learn to get a consistent shot going and I think you will find that your arrows will start to group consistently (maybe not in the bull's eye but consistent groups somewhere on the target).  Once you have that, fine tuning your equipment will be easier and give you much less confusing results.

Your equipment tune is VERY dependent on your personal style, that is why it is nearly impossible for settings for one archer to apply to what another needs.

Shawnee, I totaly agree with Moebow, your form has to preceed tuning. If I could give you some suggestions it would be to research blank bale, form, on this site and start there. Look at some of the great vids on here about this subject and I'm sure in time you will find your answer. Remember take from the advice only that which you can use. Good luck and be patient.

Hi guys thanks for the response. Yes I've been doing blank bale and thought my form was not bad but of course I'm striving for perfection. I realize that my form is going through refinement at the moment but had no idea that being just slightly off would effect my arrow flight Sooo much. It makes sence to me thoough. Tonight I was doing more blank bale and videoing my form. I also found after many shots the 200gr points are the ones giving me the most consistent bullet holes through the paper.
So I just shot paper tonight focusing on form and then checking the tear. Seemed to be a good way to test my form. What do you think? Or is there a reason that would not be not wise?  Next time I'll shoot paper video the shot then I can call it if it tears or is a bullet hole. That will allow me to figure out what I'm doing wrong on bad shots. seems like a good idea to me.

I can tell you that it's not only the release that becomes an issue but also how you are holding the bow and your follow through, I throw this in because I have similar issues but have gotten it down to one arrow in 8-10.

Look in the shooters forum under grip question, MoeBow gives a very good explanation on gripping the bow.

Also, if you could take a video from different angles of you shooting, the people here could help you more easily.

Don't worry, too much about it as it WILL all come together !

Good luck

Oh good point about the gripping the bow. I've only been shooing my recurve up until this new bow which has a lower grip. I am aware that when I draw my bow I've been fiddling with my grip but I settle before I release/follow through. I can see how this could be messing up some shots. In my video's my bow is jumping straight forward.
I'll go check out those threads too. I'll try and shoot some video for posting. The ones I have would probably be a bit dark once uploaded.
I really appreciate everyones support.

Cheers
