Two finger shooting
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:14:00 PM »
About 15 years ago, right before a big spring bear, hunt I strained a tendon on the ring finger of my shooting hand. At the time I was shooting split finger, and not knowing what to do, but being desparate to do something I just kept my ring finger off the string and shot w/ two fingers...one above and one below the nock. To my amazement I shot great this way...probably better than I did w/ three fingers on the string. Certain though that shooting this way was "wrong", as soon as I was healed I put my ring finger back on the string so I could shoot "correctly."
Fast forward to the present. While reading posts in the Shooters Forum I kept stumbling across threads in which posters mentioned shooting with only two fingers. These were usually in threads dedicated to shooting three under (something I started doing about two years ago). The mention of two finger shooting jogged my memory of the good, clean, feeling releases I had acheived using two fingers while shooting split. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me and this afternoon I went down in the basement, put two fingers under the arrow, and took a few shots. It was amazing. That same smooth, crisp, feeling I remembered from years back was still there. This time I'm NOT going back to doing it the "right" way.
Now if I can just find a shooting glove w/ two fingers!
I'm curious how many others have had similar experiences?
Incidentially, I wonder if shooting two under lessens the need to tiller a bow differently????
Any thoughts on these matters will be appreciated.
Thanks.
Kevin

Kevin:

I've been shooting 2-under for several years.  For me, it's far superior to any of the alternatives.

As for TILLER, don't worry about it.  I've read in several places that Earl Hoyt considered tiller to be a non-issue.  That's good enough for me.

My new RER is tillered at "0" which is pretty much what 3-under shooters go for.  If your tiller is different from that, just play with nock point; you'll get it right with little difficulty.

Thanks, Mark. Good to hear from someone else who has had similar experiences as mine. I have come to the same assumption as you concerning tiller over the past year or so. I just can't seem to notice any difference.
Again, thanks.
