Looking for video on form
« on: May 03, 2012, 09:35:00 PM »
I am trying to find the right video on shooting form. I had been shooting a more bent over style taught to me by Mike Fedora.  I have recently been doing a lot of reading on here and have started converting to a true back tension release and getting my body upright and in form of a 'T'. This has increased by draw length and has given me a more consistent shot.  However I feel like I am target shooting and I am concerned about using this form in a tree stand.  Do you guys use this form from a tree?

I would love to watch a video of someone shooting from a elevated platform with this method - anyone know where to find one?

Also any thoughts would be appreciated...

Thanks
Mike

Same form....just bend from the waist.  If you'll watch Ranger B's videos here in the Shooting Forum, there's one where he's shooting indoors and he has a clip of what various shooting positions do to your draw length, which is why most people will shoot over/under on an elevated shot.  Also why folks who shoot bent over might be changing their draw length.  Good luck.

I believe this is the one.  Look for any posts here in the form forum started by Ranger B....every one of them has very helpful information.

That is exactly what I needed - thanks.

Form seems that it would be hard to execute in a treestand but I got a few months to figure it out.

Standing straight up does not guarantee back tension or good form.  Not sure where you read that on this forum but if someone is telling you must stand straight up to have good form, they are selling you Kool Aid.  Same if you are drinking the 'form wont work out of a tree stand'....another falsehood.

Form is from the waist up....and form can be taken to numerous positions.  Form is not a 'one trick pony'.

Most of these videos show people completely upright and extended.  Who has a videos of someone with back straight up and down but leaning front?

pamike,
My videos show a straight up "target" type stance BUT I say MANY times that I feel that is the best way to LEARN good form and what it should FEEL like!  Terry calls it your "backyard form."

Once you have the "feel"  it will not matter what starting position you are in, hanging by your toes, or with your left little toe stuck in your right ear, you will be able to achieve good form.  Terry is absolutely correct that form is from the waist up and you need to try to achieve it no matter your position!  IF you are in a situation that you cannot achieve your form (very rare) maybe that shot should not be taken.

Learn the form first then learn to apply it to any situation.

I video taped myself and was actually pretty happy with my form in comparing them to yours and rangers.  The one thing I can't figure out is that when it feels like I really pull thru I almost always hit high. What could I be doing that would throw the arrows high?

It's possible that with a release where you are "pulling through" you are just getting more energy into the arrow, so it's flying better.  Give it some time and see.  Just make sure that your "pull through" isn't a "jerk through" where you are releasing farther back than you think.

What is interesting to me is that it mostly happens with my higher poundage bows.  I don't think I am over drawing, but I must be doing something different.

Not sure how to post videos on here but I could email to someone from my phone if that helps

There is some info on the form clock thread posted at the top of the page....and there are some vids here showing folks shooting while leaning over to the side.  There is also some info on form I did on The Bowhunters of Tradgang.com DVD.

Its all the same movement and alignment, and makes no difference if you are straight up, leaning forward, or backward with a reverse cant.  Once you learn that you can take your form to various positions, you will also strengthen your form in your 'go to shot'.

Learning to shoot with a forward lean is no harder than learning to do so straight up. Again, its all the same movement and alignment.

Here ya go....

The following videos were  not  shot with the intention of posting them.  I was 'considering' filming myself, and testing out some settings on the camera, angles, and distances for my own evaluation.  My wife hadn't even used this video camera before, and never used a tripod either.

Anyway, the clips turned out OK, so I ran them by a few guys to tell me what they thought, hence my trag gangers comment. I was more interested in quality, lighting and what not, so I could at least try and make a decent one once I got it figured out.  But, I was told to POST them 'as is', no need to 'perfect' them.  With some positive prompting, I decided what the heck. Well, I still ain't sure I should be posting them, but I trust these guys a lot.

Some computers run them smoother than others.  Straight off my card reader, they are a bit choppy, and with some sound delay.  But, if I email them to myself, they played much better.  Heck if I know.  So I appologize if the quality is poor.  I think the clips captured my form despite the very odd feeling I had shooting in front of the camera.

I enjoy the shooting threads as much as any, whether I'm contributing or being the student.  Maybe these clips will help make my contributions more clear, and I'm sure I'll learn something as well.

I'd like to thank my wife for helping me, amoungst the heat, and bugs.  And for being a sport even though she didn't have a clue as to what she was doing.                        :notworthy:

I went to Fedora's this year and left with some good solid form tips. One thing really stuck with me that helped is bending at the waist while being "locked in". My accuracy over long shooting sessions improved a lot. Remember Mike emphasizing "ground zero"? He demonstrated how your draw length can change by not bending at the waist when shooting up or down. Perhaps that could be the culprit with your heavier bow.

Here is Mike's form for reference.

Mike....in the Tradgang DVD I demonstraight how IF you are properly aligned, your draw length doesn't vary on different shooting positions.
