Shooting high?
« on: May 29, 2012, 06:44:00 PM »
First off sorry no video of me shooting.  I shoot a hill bow with the shultz drawing sequence.  I bring my bow arm up with my shoulders pointing at the target as I begin my draw.  My bow arm peaks out and steadies with about 8 inches of draw left.  My draw hand comes back straight to anchor and I lock into anchor for a fraction of a second and the shot is away and my string hand comes back.  Usually this weekend I blew up but bale work has me back on track.  Well I have been shooting this bow for 6 months and it seems that If I miss it will be high by a foot at all distances and lately its all the time.  I have to aim low to hit my spot.  I aim instinctively and have done so with recuves and RD bows for about 6 years and have always been able to hit right where I was looking, smokin lots of critters and placing really high in 3D shoots.  So I was wondering what could be causeing this.  I don't think its spine as I can't my bow and miss vertically up.  So what are some of the causes that might cause this?  If this helps I miss low when on one knee.  :help:    :help:

As you point out, without a video it is really hard to diagnose.  I do not understand your terminology, "My bow arm peaks out..."  I have no clue what you mean by this.

With a fast "Schultz" style release, (Nothing wrong with it!) be ABSOLUTELY sure you are hitting a solid anchor before you release.  If it is not consistent, you will get inconsistent results.

It sounds to me that you are just not hitting a consistent anchor point -- regardless of of your "stance."

Thanks Moebow what I meant is that my bow arm stops going up and holds onto target as I finish my draw.

One of the problems (do not read this as "not good") is that when you are "swinging up" on a target, the tendency is to not stop, but to keep moving up. A dynamic shot(one that keeps moving) is OK BUT if you do not have perfect timing, the moving bow hand will keep going and you will hit high.  For most of us, the movement of the shot MUST stop on target.  If it keeps moving, the arrow will hit in the direction of the movement.

Try slowing the "swing" and holding on your sight picture for a moment before release.  Make it deliberate and see if that helps.  If so, then increase your speed, but always the solution to a good hit is to STOP on sight reference and to be sure you have what you want before you shoot.

If I miss with my Hill bows I'll be high too. I don't use a swing draw, rather I come up on target, draw back, anchor and release. Can't seem to figure out the cause or the cure..... but the lighter draw weight of the two seems to do it more often.
