left eyed right handed
« on: July 01, 2012, 09:53:00 PM »
I shoot a Maddog longbow which I truly enjoy but I seem to be having a bit of a issue.  When I concentrate, focus on my release, I'm able to hit the spot but if I rush, my elevation is good but I am wide left.  I think this is because of my eye dominance issue.  Other than selling my Maddog and getting a lefty does anyone know of a way to help?  I know...slow down, concentrate and make the shot/  Anything else?

Kurt,
Did you try shooting with your left eye closed just to confirm your theory?  If your "wide left" goes away....you may have nailed it.  I too am left eyed and right handed but I quit fighting it and switched to LH shooting a few years back.  I could shoot targets all day long RH (and still can) but when it came to shots at game it was another story....I missed left.....way left.  You owe it to yourself to at least give LH shooting a try someday.  It was the single best thing that I ever did for my shooting.  I assure you, you won't believe the difference in the sight picture when you get that arrow under your dominant eye where it belongs.

Just my .02

You won't regret it if you stick with it.  Depending on how long you've been shooting bows right handed, the switch may be fairly easy for you.  I had about 23 years of experience shooting RH bows before I switched to LH a few years ago.  It took me about 3 months to feel comfortable shooting lefty.....However, it took me probably 3 times as long to get used to handling and nocking arrows with my left hand.
Good Luck to you.

Another added benefit that you may not think about is your bow arm.  If you do everything else right handed, your right side is usually noticeably stronger.  Therefore, your bow arm should be much more solid and steady when shooting lefty.  However, the sight picture is what makes the switch all worth it to me.  The only time that I miss left or right now is when I get a bad release, and even then it's only off by a few inches. It's just nice to have your brain and your eyes working together for a change   :D
