Deep Hook. Again!!
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:05:00 PM »
I use a deep hook but do you guys actually flex the fingers to where the pads of the fingers actually touch the base of the hand?  In other words as flexed as the fingers will go?    Thanks. Bill

The tips of the fingers are pointed back away from the direction the arrow will go.Thier not opened up.Back of the hand is straight and stretched out and as relaxed as possible.Mine dont quite touch the base of the hand but are close.I think when they touch thier is to much tension in the hand and not as much stretch for me and I get more of a pluck instead of a tension free release.

I hook at the first fingertip joint.  I can in no way see my fingers ever getting close to touching my palm while at full draw. The large finger knuckle is bent at 90 degrees and the tip joint is bent at around 45 degrees creating a "J" with my two drawing fingers. Upon release I relax the big finger joint and the rest takes care of itself.

Having said all that, my release ain't the smoothest and still need constant conscious work to be smooth. I have a thick glove to prevent grooves from forming on the finger stalls.

Bringing this back to the top, would like to hear more opinions on this. My string is in the first joint and my finger tips are at 90 degrees to the arrow. Sounds like some people like a much deeper hook.

I think Bud B. has a pretty good description.  I cannot come anywhere close to the palm (base of the hand?), would have to see someone close their hand/ fingers that far.

In Bob's drawing, the fingertips are bent all the way back so they're pointing back at you. I can get my finger joints to bend that much, but not without putting a lot of tension on them. Would it be better to force them to bend that much, or to just bend them as far as I can without tension?

For me, the tips of the index and middle finger point back at my throat about 45*.  The ring finger tip is less angled and on the pad of the finger.

I feel that trying to get them all the way around where they point back in the direction of the arrow is too far and gives me too much tension in the hand.

Correct, the illistruction is not exact but close. Personally, I shoot off the pad of the ring finger and do not get in that deep as illustrated. I also hook the index finger upward slightly.

As you get more comfortable with this idea, the string will "go" more easily.  Also, often, a re-tune is needed as form changes.  Just don't tune too soon.  Let the new ideas "take" for a while before you start trying to change other things.

Oh man I wish I'd heard about this earlier. I was using the just the tips of my fingers on my 55'er and after switching to this method it feels like I'm pulling 15 pounds less!
