Releasing arrow?
« on: January 23, 2013, 08:42:00 PM »
Today while stump shooting I noticed my arrows leaving a little funny half way through. I just started about 2 months ago so I'm really new to trad shooting.

Two of my arrows back to back, left rear end swinging to the right. I thought maybe it was a spine problem at first... But later on they straightened up perfectly!

So the two things I maybe got it down too were.
A- Maybe I'm releasing differently at full draw?
OR
B- I thought I noticed when I canter the bow a little bit, they seemed to do it?

Im shooting ben pearson mustang 45@28
3555 GT traditionals 125gr point 29"

Can someone bring some insight please?
THanks

God bless
Jake

Jake,

If you have been shooting only 2 months then as you suggest it is not a spine issue; it is you.  This is normal at your stage.  Arrow flight is affected far more by your form and release than any equipment problem.  This will change with time but for now when you see something that you don't think is right, odds are it is something you are doing and not the bow or arrows.

I posted a video on You Tube called "release tips".  You can go to YouTube and search for TheMoebow1 -- see if that helps any.

10 4,

Thanks Arne! I'll look into it right away. Thats actually good to hear its me and not the equipment. I've been battling spine issues for awhile so...

I'm having a difficult time getting my release down, your video might answer these questions but I'll ask anyways.

When you release, is your goal to release quickly without/ less of interference with your shooting hand.

OR... do you more or less want to slide or roll your fingers off the string? BTW I use a glove.

Other then that I've been trying to establish a proper ancho point, when I shot compound forever it was easy. Bring the release to your corner of your mouth, nose on the string. With  a recurve I'm trying that, but it seems if I'm not thinging it all the time, I'll release rght before it touches that spot on my face. BUT! I'm pretty sure after those years of shooting wheelie bow, its burned in my head. Because even if I don't come all the way back where my finger is touching my face, when I let go my finger hits me in the same spot on my mouth every time! ahah, so I guess I'm still consistant???

Thanks again Arne

You cannot move your fingers fast enough to not interfere with the string.  And letting the string roll off your fingers not only causes blisters and pain but really upsets the shot.

The string itself will move your fingers out of the way if you just relax and let it.  No pain or blisters and a clean release.

Hate to say it, but those 35/55 are probably a little stiff for a 45# Mustang, which will make your release all the more critical. Try loading up the point weight as much as you can - 175 or 200gr. even and see what difference it makes. Do you draw a full 28" ?

That makes sense Arne, thanks.

Hmmm, never noticed much tango, today I shot a event and never saw any radical path of the arrow. I'm not saying it doesn't, I've just never noticed it! I will but some heavier fp and try it out though... I currently shoot 125 grain, and I probably shoot closer to 28.5" possibly pushing 29...
