Anchor point: natural or chosen?
« on: February 17, 2013, 01:59:00 PM »
Ok,
I don't even know why I am asking because all this does is mess me up BUT i need to know something.

If I close my eyes and come back to anchor WITHOUT THINKING about anchor points I naturally place my index finger in this divet in my jaw/corner of mouth and lock in with my thumb knuckle behind my jaw. Back tension feels great, alignment looks and feels good. BUT my gaps are bigger than id like.  SO I have been working on middle finger in the corner of my mouth and I still get that knuckle behind my jaw, BUT it does not feel natural to me.  Almost like now I have to think about it and something feels off in my alignment also, but the kicker is I shoot really good this way as I have a point on of 26 yds and all is well in that regard but is seems to be a touch distracting.
I shoot middle finger in the corner 99% of the time but you get me shooting aerial and moving targets and VIOLA back to index finger.

SO I guess what I am asking is:  When you are shooting does everything feel natural to you or are there things that you actually focus on to assure proper form/alignment?  I struggle with this a bit even though I shoot middle finger most of the time.

I guess I am worried is say for instance I am hunting and all of a sudden I have a  shot, am I going to anchor what feels natural and then  shoot high or will my training kick in and Ill go to middle finger and all is well?

How long have you been working on the change?  Most things will not feel natural and take some work to do consistent when you are used to a different way.  It takes time to make a change feel  normal and do it without thinking.

It seems like its been about a year. But I just shoot to shoot sometimes and I'm not thinking about it.  But when Im focusing on the bale is when I can "feel" that its not right. And when Im stumping or even at a 3D I draw to my natural feeling anchor, notice it and then raise it up to the middle finger and shoot..

Learning to do any of the things we do when shooting a bow is tougher the second time around. I know I am making a change now after roughly 40 years of doing it one way. I do have what feels to be a natural anchor for me. I have not tried to alter that part of my routine. Most of my change was in head position, posture and a focus on back tension. I have always shot very quick and started to creep forward before release. I have been doing drills to hold at draw and it is getting better every day. I now hold for 1.5-1.8 sec at full draw before releasing the arrow. I have my daughter use a timer to help me stick to this new routine. Sorry to go on but just trying to make a point. If you feel you need a change it is going to take time and attention to detail. If the change will make you a better shooter go for it and watch the improvements. Golf, shooting a pistol or shotgun are all tougher if you start without a teacher and then try to change. Too many bad habits creep in and it is ground zero all over again.

This is my natural anchor and its between the index and middle finger to the corner. Im going to stick with it.  Rasing up the half an inch allows me to shotgun the arrow more and drop my point on but i can feel some not good stuff going on in the shoulders and loss of back tension. Thanks y'all
