the cant of the bow...aiming methods?
« on: November 13, 2013, 05:01:00 PM »
When I shoot I cant my bow and I just line up my arrow straight under my target when aiming. However whenever I hold my bow straight up and down I shoot a foot to the right(I am a lefty)

So, my question is this...is my form/aiming off(and no matter if my bow is flat, canted or straight up I should just aim the arrow right under the bulls eye) or do you have to aim the arrow different positions if you are shooting straight up, canted, or flat?

If your arrows are spined properly, everything is in tune and your form is solid then it won't matter if you hold vertical, cant, or horizontal. Sounds as if your arrows may be stiff or you're changing your anchor/alignment when you cant the bow.
We are all here because we are not all there.

Chief,

Ideally, with any bow orientation, you want the sight reference to be under (or on a vertical line through) the  bull's eye.  It sounds like with your "cant" you are tilting your eye over the nock end of the arrow.  But when you shoot with a vertical or other orientation you do not have the nock end of the arrow under your eye.

This is just a guess without actually seeing you shoot but I'm betting I'm right.  Many times (another guess on my part) this happens when folks draw too far to the side of their face (overdrawing) rather than to a point where the arrow stays under the eye at full draw.

IF you have to "offset" your aim, you will encounter inaccuracy at different distances due to parallax.

Arne
I think you just gave me a great tip.  There are days that I am shooting so well I think I have a sight on my bow.  I have noticed that something is differnet those days.  I seem to be overtop the arrow better.  I was not sure what I was doing those days but now that you mentioned it I think it might be that on most days my eye is positioned slightly to the left and not under the nock.  Something to check when I get home tonight.  Now trying to figure out how to get my head in the right position.

Tracker,

Just keep your head on top of your spine.  Don't PUT it anywhere then draw to the string to you, don't go to get it.

Going to the string is a problem that I catch myself doing at times.  Did it with the wheel bow as well trying to settle over the peep. It's one of those things I forget to check paying more attention to using prober back tension and getting a good anchor.

I don't think my head ever ends up over my spine. Out of body experience   ;)

Fred Asbell said u cant the bow to get the arrow under your eye.  That way I know if the point is under the bullseye, I just have to worry about elevation (gap).

I think we cant the bow because it is ergonomically better.  It doesn't feel as comfy holding straight up and some times it doesn't feel good at all.  A natural, relaxed hold of your arm includes some degree of "cant".  Now. . . .  what Arne said..
