A Thought on Canting A Bow
« on: January 07, 2014, 01:18:00 PM »
I've been thinking about my form lately and have thought about the bows I have and how I shoot them accurately. My longbow, which I've shot more than either of the two recurves I have, Shoots pretty much the same whether I cant the bow or not. I want to accredit this to arrow tuning and correct spine of arrow and the time I've spent tuning the arrows to the bow. I've come to this in thinking about how I shoot a short recurve I have that shoots shorter, stiffer spined arrows. When I shoot that bow, I have to cant the bow or I hit far left of the intended target, suggesting the arrow spine is too stiff for the bow. When canted hard to the right however, the arrow impacts in line of the target in respect to left and right. Just a topic of thought.

Another thing you could do with the recurve is to change to a softer strike plate, which will move the point of impact to the right.  The softest one I've found is the Martin Rug Rest, but any material that is softer than the strike plate you are using would have the same effect, to a greater or lesser degree.

I have collected a few old Bear Kodiaks.  The oldest one I have is a '59, and I have the same problem with it.  I really don't want to change to a softer strike plate, because I want to keep it in as mint condition as possible.  The arrows bare shaft fine, so it seems that the spine of the arrows I'm using is correct.  Kind of puzzling as to what to do.  It really doesn't matter that much, because I don't plan to shoot that bow very much, but I would like for any bow I own to shoot where I'm aiming, whether I plan to shoot it a lot or not.

Depending on how the arrow is spined should determine how the arrow impacts the target. Feathers angled right or feathers angled left would determine stiff or soft.  Where the arrow hits the target whether right or left on the target should be a result of where you aim or a result of form flaws.  A different type f bow I would think would create the later.  I impact left when I release before I hit my anchor.  I also shoot a longbow and recurve and hit left more than on the LB.  I thought it was the bow and it was in a way. The recurve is almost 10# heavier and brings out my flaws mores than the lighter Draw Weight bow.
