Setting Up A Bow To Hit Where You Look?
« on: March 11, 2014, 08:40:00 PM »
Folks if you shoot the Rick Welch style or not it naturally seems smart to set a bow up to hit where you look. However I havent done this because I dont know what materials are used. Could somebody fill me in? Is it nessesary for consistent accuracy?

this was this morning.

20 yards, practicing.50 pound bow.

On that target my fuzzy arrow tip/blurred arrow, was just above the small bottom circle,But i was starring at the center.

Your eyes will naturally center your eyes in a circle.(Set your hands on your thighs.dont aim just look at the center of your screen,I bet you can point/move your finger almost dead center.)(touch the screen when you do it .)Add.

Then do the same thing,BUT, now as soon as,your finger becomes into view, follow the tip of your finger(never take your eye off of it) as you try to touch the center. What seems easier?

Make sure your anchor, bow hand, and back tension, are consistent.

I burn a hole,in the center, of the target if I am not using sights. If I use sights I burn a hole in my sights. But that is what works for me.

The Rick Welch method of tuning the bow to hit where you look assumes that you are capable of shooting groups like TomatoLane does SOMEWHERE on the target.  If you have progressed to that point, then you are probably aware that your shots either go where you want them to go, or else you have to hold off the spot you want to hit to make them go where you want them to go.

First, be sure that your eye is over the arrow.  Be sure your form is good and you're not torquing the string or the bow.  Do these things first and get used to shooting correctly before you start making other adjustments.

If everything else is fine, but you're still hitting left/right/high/low, then you can move the point of impact 4 - 6" at 20 yards by changing the arrow rest or strike plate material, or adjusting the spine of your arrows or your nock point.  A stiff arrow rest or strike plate, like plain leather, will cause the point of impact to move up or left, for a RH shooter.  A soft arrow rest or strike plate, like a Martin rug rest, will move the POI down or right.  A medium one, like Velcro, will hit in between.

You can also adjust the POI by changing the spine of the arrow or the nock point (I know, you already adjusted these things to shoot level bare shaft, but Rick doesn't care about that, unless it is so out of range that it causes irregular fletched arrow flight).  Also be aware that when you change the spine of fletched arrows, it might move the POI in the opposite direction than you expect.

My regular bow shoots where I look. I find these techniques most useful in getting a different bow to shoot in the same place as my regular bow.

In Rick's lessons, he usually finds something to adjust on a student's bow. Just make sure that you're not adjusting to compensate for a bad habit, when you should really be changing something about the way you shoot.

Assumming your arrows are spined correctly, and fly their best. The natural point of aim, can be achieved by alignment to the target. It is the positioning of the feet to the target line. Skeet and rifle shooters, and golfers are a few examples. Take a stance at 10 - 15 yds from a target shoot a few, then draw with the eyes closed and when you open them if your still on the spot (target), you have a natural point of aim. If your off to the left, for a right-hander, your stance is too open and if your off right, your stance is closed. This will vary from one person to the next. When in the field, and getting in position to shoot, it is often necessary to move the front foot to be in alignment, not always possible, and one reason for missing.
