New Shooter Help
« on: October 06, 2014, 05:57:00 PM »
First time to archery - other than shooting an old Bear recurve as a kid, and not really sure where to start on forum and set up etc...

I bought a Proghorn and absolutely love the bow and want to hunt with it; however, I'm not accurate enough for the field, but want to get there.

So can someone point me in the right direction for form guides, bow and arrow tuning, and set-up etc...?

I have noticed that my arrows will fly straight with some shoots and porpoise on others. After some research I discovered that has to do with the knock. What I haven't figured out though is why I'm consistently hitting 4 inches right and low...

I know that I'm a new shooter and these problems will arise, but I don't have any references as to how to fix these issues or identify them. Any help and guides to learning would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all and take care

South Fork,

Welcome!

Your arrow flight will improve as you get more familiar with the shot sequence and become more proficient with it.  Here is a tip.  Initially do not try to hit a bull's eye or target.  Just shoot and let the "butt" catch your arrows.  It doesn't matter right now where they hit, just that you are shooting.

Many books and videos out there, but you might look at these to see if they give you any ideas to try.

Welcome to the forum, Dillon!

If you're a right-handed shooter, and you're consistently hitting right and low, then you must be doing something correctly, because there are a lot more mistakes that would cause you to hit left and high than right and low.  If you've eliminated all of those, then you can thank God for small favors.

Arne (Moebow) is really good at analyzing videos that people post, and the videos he references above are top-notch.  So look at his videos first, and see if that suggests anything to you, and then video yourself shooting and post it here. Video yourself from the side and from high in back as you are shooting.  Also study Terry's form clock, which has a separate string of posts in this section. Terry stresses proper alignment, which is the foundation of your shot.
