Back Importance in the Shot
« on: July 07, 2015, 08:33:00 PM »
I have been shooting one type of bow or another since 1966.  And for the best part of those years I was an arm puller.  Probably the worst part of drawing with the arms is creeping before the shot.

I have been pretty consistent in using my back muscles lately and my improved shooting has been the result.  Tonight I got another lesson on how important back tension is.  Went to my tuesday evening 3D shoot to my archery club and shot with a few of my buddies.  For the first part of the coursesI was a full 6" low on my gaps whether it was 15 yards or 35.

I just returned from Pebble Beach CA golfing with my son and have not drawn a bow for a week.    I know something in my form was causing the low impact so I just made sure I went thru my shot sequence and as soon as I took the time to do that I knew right off I was not using the back and expanding.  Next shot on a 35 yard ram was center punched and all went we'll from then on.

I am thinking of putting on some tape on the belly of the bow just as a reminder.

Tony,
I fall victim to the same thing. Since we both are golfers we use analogies and visuals to work on our golf swings. My only thought on this one is to visualize your right forearm and upper arm as a screen door and after anchoring think "Close the screen door" which will rotate the elbow towards your backside and engage your back.

It makes a huge difference in my release too. Maybe it will work for you.

No, we have family vacation that interferes with Denton.

I envy you for playing Pebble. I'm recovering from knee problem trying to get better for a 3 day trip to Penn National next week. Seeing the ortho doc today.

I know where your coming from T....Been tuning a few bows the last couple weeks and shooting suffers from over load. I'm quality over quantity shooter and the first thing that goes to crap is the back!!! When you think your pullin enough pull alot more  ;)

Just got a tip from a very good tournament bare bow archer that wins on the national scene.  He said shoot quality shots and do not shoot to much.  I have been very guilty of shooting in the yard till I was tired.

As of late I have been forcing myself to take a few days off.
