3 under cutting my nose
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:28:00 PM »
I have a new Gamemaster II that I'm tuning and have shot 3 under for several years now and get great results. I used to get the occasional nock set scratch but now it is every shot. So much so that I have blood dripping. I switched back to split fingers. Thoughts? I have tried canting the bow as well shooting it vertical.

The last time I met with Rick Welch, he noticed I was doing that, except in my case it was my cheek rather than my nose that was bleeding.  He had me switch on the spot from a tab I was using to a glove, and that seems to have taken care of it.  Rick said the same thing happened to him, which is why he uses a glove rather than a tab.

The string passes very close to your nose, regardless of what you do, and a very small change can change a near miss to a near hit.  Even now that I've switched to a glove, I still hit my cheek or nose on occasion, without really knowing why I'm doing it.  As with you, there seems to be one bow it happens with more than others.  I suspect I skim my nose from time to time, but as long as it doesn't happen enough to cause it to bleed, it isn't a problem.  When it does cause it to bleed, then every little contact will start it bleeding again, and I have to make a conscious effort to rotate my head further out of the way than I usually do until it has a chance to heal.  Maybe I should be doing this anyway, as I've read that the more you rotate your head to face the target, the better off you are.

It seems to help, and I think is probably better for my form, if I don't lock into my anchor so much, but instead make a more delicate contact with my face.  I think when I lock into my anchor I may have a tendency to rest on it, whereas when I barely touch my face I have to focus more on maintaining my back tension.  I don't really like anchoring this way, because I'm not used to it, so it is still more of a thought rather than a recommendation at this point.

Same thing happened to me. I went back to split. I can still get feather to the nose too.

Switched back to split and it helped  lot. Groups are still high but it's coming together.

I had a problem with this earlier this year. Seemed like every shot, I hit my nose, upper lip and lower lip. Sometimes individually, sometimes collectively. I, too, shoot three under. As Dave said, squaring your stance to the target helped me. In addition to this, I solved my problem by really focusing on back tension and getting my string hand shoulder/elbow fully back and into proper alignment. Once I did this, I quit hitting my face.

Gents.
I stumbled on this several weeks ago while trying to solidify my anchor point.I made a tiny kisser button out of yarn on the string right about the corner of my mouth. It was just too high for my liking but I did notice that if I clipped my nose
(which I rarely do thanks to glasses)it didn't sting much at all.Reduces friction I guess.
Worth a try.
Good Luck,
Sack

Look at your stance, keep your head level, the string comes to the head not the other way around. Most likely you are getting contact for two reasons, head not turned all the way to the left or you are moving your head down to meet the string. Next time you shoot try this, square off with the target with your stance, raise both arms straight up and see where your bow arm is pointed in relation to the target. Adjust your stance until the bow arm is pointed at the target squarely when raised.

If using a metal nocking point, try a tied on nocking point.  It worked for me.

Love a tab, but had to switch to glove for same reason.
