Arrow length and point on

Can someone explain to me how it works, I have heard archers play with arrow length to achieve their desired point on aim.

This works best if you are gap shooting using the arrow point as a reference. The longer the arrow the shorter the point on is. Basic geometry. Shorter arrow has to be raised up higher to be in the same sight line as the longer arrow so it is going to launch at a higher angle. There will be diminishing returns depending on how high you anchor since it's hard to distinguish between a 32" arrow and a 30.5" arrow with a very high anchor.

I went from a 28.5" arrow and a 45 yard point on to a 30.5" arrow and a 35 yard point on so it worked for me.

It is but one of several factors that archers will tinker with in order to reduce PO.  As reddogge points out, it's also one of the least significant.  The difference of 1" in your sight picture is going to be minimal, if noticeable at all, but every little bit helps. Most combinations will yield a PO in the 40 yd or greater range...getting that to a PO at hunting/3D ranges of 20-25 yds. requires some effort.  Let's see, I went from split to 3U, index to middle finger anchor, intentionally high nock sets, heavier arrows and a 3/4" crawl to get there....but I'm there, and I started with a roughly 2.5 foot gap @ 20 yds.
