The pumice stone sold as a burr remover doesn't work very well on wool.  It takes as much or more wool off as it does burrs.  I've never tried the knife method, but I expect it might remove quite a bit of wool as well.  The only way I've ever been able to get them out is to pick them out by hand.

looks like i'll try the knife method and get a cat brush, thank you very much for the suggestions!
