Concentration
« on: July 06, 2016, 01:25:00 PM »
It seems at longer ranges I have trouble concentrating sometimes closer, is this from shooting to much? I keep glancing at the arrow not intentionally and it messes up my shot, any suggestions?
Thanks
Kyle

It may be harder to concentrate at longer ranges because it is harder to see a specific spot on the target.  I think the main reason we try to focus on the smallest thing we can see, whether it be a hair, a mark on the bullseye, etc., is to avoid letting our focus wander, whether to the arrow point, antlers, or whatever other distractions there may be.  Keep in mind that a person's ability to hold a focus is generally shorter than he might think, and you may be attempting to hold longer than you are able because of your uncertainty about the long shot.  Just concentrate on the smallest thing you can see at whatever distance you're shooting, and don't attempt to hold any longer for a long shot than you would for a shorter shot.

Kyle, I think you need an extended session of blank bale shooting at VCR (very close range) with eyes closed. I believe Jeff Kavanagh did a YouTube video on blank bale shooting some time ago. You are concentrating (and worrying about)your grouping, etc when you need to develop a consistent shot form sequence first.

Two top local hunter/3-D shooters told me to shoot only 3 arrows, then retrieve them before shooting again. The idea is to buy some time.

The only confirmation I have is that my first and last arrows are usually good and everything in between tends to be not-so-good. If I just shot 3 arrows, 2/3 would be (and are) good.
