It makes your brain to skip the 'scary' dialog part that is happening in your mind:
"- damn, it is a long way to that tiny point I want to hit"
"- sh*t, I don't think I can hit it"
"- the guy made a 10, I really need a 10 too"
etc etc etc
Looking to the tip of the arrow you forget the distance
Looking just to the target once in position you forget the distance.
It's the way to shut-down your voices while shooting. Very good tip Tradcat. I've seen this variant of 'empty your mind' on Recurve Tournament in 2016. A competitor, I think it was a woman who actually went in semi-finals, was looking up in the sky during the draw and just when she was in position she was looking to the target.
