deep hook (too deep?)
« on: August 30, 2017, 05:16:00 AM »
Where do you guys grip the string? I believe most hook it in the first knuckle joint. For years I have been hooking it deeper than that. I have always run the string between my first and second knuckle. Now I wonder if that is too deep, and may be causing some of my inconsistencies. Last night I tried running it down the first knuckle joint, and although it feels very funny after years of doing it another way, my shots came off cleaner and my groups tightened up. My right misses seemed to go away too. I know that running the string across the tips of your fingers is generally thought to require too much string hand tension and result in not so clean releases, but can gripping it past the first knuckle joint cause some of the same issues?

Yes. Either way is likely to result in some plucking/torquing of the string. Play around a bit with the exact placement of the string in fingers; directly at the crease sometimes pressures nerves in the finger.
Just barely in front of that, but definetely not off fingertips, works best for me.

When my shot goes right I know that I have "too much finger on the string" (quote from an Olympic coach friend of mine). The hardest part of the release is getting your fingers out of the way of the string. That's why high tension in the right rhomboyd will help you get a clean release. Your fingers will come off the string MUCH faster than by just relaxing tension.
