Daniel Boone's Trail Soup
« on: October 22, 2011, 01:30:00 PM »
The famous trailblazer Daniel Boone spent many years of his life living in the wilderness. He early learned to forage for food. The following recipe is one which not only Boone, but all woodsman were accustomed to preparing over the campfire. For salt pork, Boone might have substituted jerky (dried beef) or fresh squirrel or other game. He also would have used wild onions, mushrooms, dandelions, and other such edibles when they were available.Instead of noodles he probably would have emptied a handful of cornmeal into his soup pot.

1/4 lb. salt pork, slivered
1 med. onion, chopped
1/4 cup flour
1 quart milk (or enough powdered milk mixed with water to equal 1 quart)
1 cup noodles
1/4 tsp. of your favorite herb seasoning
salt/pepper to taste

Fry salt pork and onions in a large skillet.Blend flour into the hot fat. Gradually add milk and stir constantly while the mixture thickens. Add seasonings, then noodles. Cover skillet with tight lid and cook 10-15 minutes  :campfire:
Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. TGMM ♥
