Heavy Carbons - Grizzlystiks

I recently purchased Alaska Bowhunter Supplies Grizzlystik carbon shafts. As far as heavy and tough goes, these shafts are hard to beat. I'm shooting the 15 grains/inch shaft and my total arrow weight at 29.5 inches, with a 75gr. brass insert and a steel broadhead adapter in a Wensel Woodsmen, is 800 grains.

The entire shaft is tapered from the nock to the broadhead, with the nock-end using a 9/32 nock, and the front end being slightly larger in diameter than the broadhead. However, the brass insert is tapered to match the diameter of the broadhead.

For some, the larger outside diameter goes against the theory the shaft should be smaller than the broadhead, but I find the flight characteristics and penetration outstanding.

I'm totally satisfied with these heavy carbons and I will put them to the test during a black bear hunt in Northern Saskatchewan in a couple of weeks.

I also have some of the new ones and they are great!  Snazzy looking and fly like darts.  Heavy tapered carbons are a very hard combination to beat.  Plus, dealing with Ed Schlief is a total pleasure.

As an aside, right now Ed is hunting for big black bears down in SE Alaska.  He and his hunt and trad archery in general will be the subject of a magazine article for a publication called (I think) Heartland Magazine.

Anyway, wish him luck and good luck to you on your upcoming bear hunt!

What broadhead?

Hi Terry,

I haven't put BH's on mine yet so I can't answer your question for these shafts.  My best guess for what would work well with these 15 grain/# shafts (about 105# static spine) and your 75# ACS would be my two personal favorites: either the 190 grain Ribtek or the 190 grain Grizzly.  Your arrows will be +/- 28.5" to BOP, right?

I agree, GrizzlyStiks are a great looking arrow and Ed is a pleasure to deal with. I used the yellow/orange fade EZE-Crest arrow wraps with orange feathers - truely an outstanding looking arrow. I've loaded the front end with Wensel Woodsman broadheads.

stick, maybe I need to try those again .A good while back I shot a demo and found it kind a hard to pull out 3 D ....but sound like they have made some changes. Thats great..what pound bow do you shoot with them ??? thanks <,Mark

I use a 64# @28" Silvertip Longbow. I'm pulling about a little more then 29." So, probably around 66#.

I have not shot these arrows into a 3-D target, so I have no idea about the trouble pulling out of one. For a broadhead target I use 2" thick insulation board (Polyisocyanurate ?) from Home Depot, cut out a bear figure and glued five sections together, for a total thickness of 10 inches. Not as tough as a 3-D target but it does the job for about $20.

Are they selling the Grizz Sticks yet?

I have been hearing people talking about shooting them for a couple of years now but everytime I e-mail Ed saying I'd like to buy some I hear that they are not out yet!

I used a two part epoxy on both, the insert and the nock inserts.

Ed has the GrizzlyStiks in stock. . . .  at least he did two weeks ago. The new Stiks are pricey, but they sure do fly good.  

I would venture to say the GrizzlyStik is one of the best carbon shafts on the market. As I stated in a previous post; for some, the only negative about the shaft (if there is one)is the outside diameter at the BOP.

It would be interesting to see if anybody uses the Grizz Stiks on XXL game, such as water/cape buffalo.  

Again, the shafts are pricey and I never thought I would fork-over that much money for shafts. . . . for now, it was money well spent.

I know that Lenny Rock used the GrizzlySticks on A Kodiak Brown Bear...and that is an XXL critter.
