I just Bought a chek-mate 60 in Bow. It is 46lb at 27 in, but I draw 28 1/2. what would be the best arrow weight, and broadhead for Black bear, and aprox arrow speed

hey bigbear,
i am new to trad archery also and i also just got a chek-mate.  mine is a 58" hunter 1 it is 59@28 but i draw about 27 so it looks like we are in the same boat.  i can not help with your question seeing as i am new also and am experimenting myself but i wanted to tell you that you should post this in the PowWow forum because more people will see it there.  there are tons of guys on this site that will be more than willing to help you out.

Bigbear , ya might be stressing those limbs too much .....inspect ur bow always....A bow say at 28 would be better or your exact draw length...some bows arent designed for the longer draws , safety is an issue...good luck..mark...I had a good friend had 30 inch draw...shot 27 inch recurve and the bow exploded at an indoor tournament...your probably ok...2016 legacy would shoot in that bow ...

You'll be pulling about 50-51@28 1/2.  No worries about the limbs (I'm very familiar with Chek-Mate bows).

I've never hunted bear, but my guess would be a total arrow weight of 400-500 (or heavier) grains and a sharp broadhead will do the trick easily.  Be sure you get perfect arrow flight--a wobbly arrow will rob you of penetration.

Speed will depend on the arrow weight, type string, your release, etc.  You should be getting around 180 fps or more with a 450 grain arrow.

I am not sure about Blk Bear but from all I have heard they are thin skinned animals and with a well placed arrow of 450 or 500 grains you should do fine just make sure your B.H's are sharp. I have taken some pretty rank hogs that had really thick gristle shields with my recurves in the 43 to 55 lb range and that is with my 26 inch short draw. Good luck.

I killed 1 bear with a 52lb Black Widow, 2213 arrow and 160 grain Snuffer (525 grain arrow)-through the chest, breaking 2 ribs, and into the dirt on the other side.  2 bears with 55lb Widow, cedar arrows and big Snuffers (580 gr arrows), both passthroughs with the second entering the chest, getting both lungs and heart quartering away, and exiting through the front leg to stick in a log.  The last 2 bears are P&Y size.  Black bears are thin skinned/light boned compared to a deer except for the shoulder which is heavy.  If I were you I'd try a 2213 from your bow and get a good, solid heavy broadhead.  I'm partial to Snuffers, of course, but if you want a 2 blade I would highly recommend the 160 gr STOS, it is a fine, tough head.

Hey Ryan, why are you partial to snuffers? I missed a doe at 20 yds with a snuffer at 240 fps. She jumped the string. It was the snuffers fault. (I'm pulling your leg...hard) Don B
