other broadheads
« on: June 07, 2005, 02:56:00 PM »
I know that the grizzlies are the head of choice by many for big, dangerous game.  Still, it is a bit of trouble to modify the heads to the degree suggested.  Has anyone had any success with ribteks or the solid piece shkote broadheads on big buff?  Dr. A, what do you think of these heads?  I would like to do a buff hunt next year, but the steel file is not my thing.  Brady

Brady, hope I can tell you more very soon.  Leaving in a couple of days for a couple months more buff testing.  The Shkote will get a good go on this trip, and the Silver Flames will be punished hard.  Really want to see how tough they are.  Among the many others getting a close look this time is also the STOS, Eclipse and Magnus I and II and more with the Ribteck and Black Stump.  Will let you know when I have an answer for you!

Ed,
Fantastic.  There is no better answer than that.  I only wish I was along as a "test pilot."  I hope that the data is good, otherwise I am going to have to send my grizzlies to Brisbane to be sharpened correctly.  In the meantime, I expect to run them through a big eland and about 9 other unlucky African critters next month!  Good hunting.  Brady

DocBrady, I look foward to Dr. Ashby's report on the SilverFlames but I seriously doubt that you could find a head for game the size you are talking about any better than the 180gr Silverflame. I have 4 more 165gr heads coming and they should get here in the next few days. I would be happy to send you one for testing and your trip if you would like. It's not the BIG head Markus makes but the 165 certainly is not puny in hand. Just shoot me a pm if you are interested.

Dr. Ashby, good luck in your upcoming testing. I for one will certainly be anticipating the results. Btw, when will the latest report be available for printing? I remember you had it committed to a publication or something and was just curious if there was a time line? I would like to print a copy to hang up at my hunting camp for all the members to read and was curious when I might be able to do that.

All the best to both of you on your upcoming trips,
Bryan

will be anxious to hear about the Silver Flames also as i sell them .

sold 39 to a gentleman a couple of months ago to  test as he was heading to Africa for Cape Buff . a week after he got them i got a bunch of spread sheets of broadhead tests from him and was amazed at the heads he had tried and his coments on how they worked .really amazed at how poor some of the top names did .

the Silver Flames did good now i am waiting to see if he lives through the final test -- herb

Bryan,

Expect that I'll release a copy of the Momentum/KE atricle to the Gang when I get back from this next round of testing; sometime in August.

The SilverFlame has done well so far.  Good enough that it (certainly) already ranks among the better broadheads available.  It's most likely the best screw-mount broadhead available, but just HOW good is it?  Don't know yet, but I'm going to try and find out on this trip.  I hope I can give a beter overview soon.

Doctorbrady,

If you want the sharpest broadhead and one of the strongest available, 180gr Silver Flame! As mentioned above this is finest screw on head ever made. Call Herb and order a few and see for yourself, you will not be disapointed.

Hay all, been a while.  I agree that the Silver Flame is one of the Greats, and the sharpest one I've ever tested out of the box.  I have been in negotiation with markus, and should be expecting an un-vented version here soon.  When he next gets his blades cut, he will request a few without holes, so to speak.  I've asked for these specifically, for weight mostly, since I have to account for the lost mass vs a 190 Grizzly w/steel adapter.  I also feel this will help with penetration, albeit miniscule at best, and possibly flight noise.  If anyone would like to just on the wagon, let me know and I can make the order slightly larger.  Hope this is of some use to you Dr. Ashby and Dr. Brady.

AEW ,
yup they are pricey but when you spend $10000 US on a buff hunt and wound it because you scrimpted on the broadhead . in Africa if you draw blood you bought it !!! work good on pigs too   :D  -- herb

It wasn't taken as snarky 8^) Not at all. Hopefully, I didn't come off as snarky either. After seeing the difference in price compared to the bulk of broadheads out there, I hadn't taken into account that, as you've mentioned, people are spending 10 G's on the hunt itself and want to cover all the bases. The components for these heads are CNC machined. As a longtime CNC machinist, I know the astronomical cost of such machinery and the software for making model surfaces and CNC programs. On the other hand, I know the efficiency of such technology and hope to see the broadhead prices get a little better as the equipment pays for itself. Just my .02 cents.
I can hardly wait to see how all the new heads stand up in the coming test.
The older I get, the better I was.

AEW, Herb equated the price to a safari but I look at it in a little different light. If I do everything I am supposed to do, right, then I will loose an arrow on a good buck or a very large hog(300+) and the last but a most important aspect is the head which will encounter the animals body. The last thing I will do is buy cheap for the working part of my hunt. As for durned near everything else, I will shop with the best of 'em for a deal or workable alternative depending on what item is being discussed.

Don't waste your money on the long Tuskers from OZ.
The front 1/3 bends over upon impact with bone.
Grizzly 190 & STOS are great.
