Bison videos
« on: November 11, 2009, 09:28:00 PM »
I posted this on the pow wow forum but thought it might be good here too.

I need some amo for the upcoming regs mtg. The Yukon presently won't allow us to hunt bison with a bow. They have regs that state the caliber of rifle you can use. They say the WOOD BISON are too big to hunt with a bow  .

It's my intent to get it changed. I have been down this road before but I think I need to show them VIDEO of actual hunts.

Then they told me I can't get close enough to them because as soon as they hear a snow machine they start moving now. They have wisened up to them. I told them I don't hunt on a snow machine and that I spot and stalk they went blank.

I was just hunting bison with a friend on the weekend he had the gun and I had my bow. So we spotted this big bull and he took off in the bush. So I decided to follow his trail and push the bull to him. I got within 15 yards of this guy after about 200 yards tracking and he didn't even know I was there.

I should have just stuck him with an arrow and proved it, but I thought better when I though of all of you out there.

What we don't need is radical bowhunter out there proving the obvious  :knothead:  .

Anyway if you have any videos and you can send them to me by mail or post them on the web some where it would be great.

They have to be WOOD BISON - their other argument was that the ones they had studied were all plains bison and that they are so much smaller

Unbelievable

Jerry, I killed two Bison with a Hickory self bow, oh yes and only used two arrows, one for each.
PM me if you want some more details.
Only video I can think of is the one that Fred Eichler did when he hunted them at Pink Mountain.
Regards, Bert

Hi Jerry,

A fellow by the name of Jerry Stout shot and videoed a bison kill.  It wasn't a hunt, he purchased the bull on the hoof and wanted to shoot it with his longbow as a way of dispatching it prior to butchering.  Jerry is the bowyer at Juniper Mountain Bows.  I'll have to see if I still have his contact info if you can't find it.  The shot was with a 57# bow with a 160 grain Grizzly head on a fiberglass shaft.  Unbelieveably quick kill. Complete penetration.  Can't remember the live weight of the bull, but I believe Jerry said he got 880 pounds of meat off of the animal.  Very impressive evidence of the lethality of arrows.

Really? Folks have been taking african/asiatic buffalo, hippopotamus, rhinoceros, and elephant (plenty of well documented accounts, too) with bows & arrows since the 1950's, but somehow woods bison find themselves impervious to such tackle. I must say, I find myself highly doubting their position...
